I bought a new brug

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

Hi, I have an unnamed brug that I purchased at the local nursery last weekend. It went out for some sunshine today, but will be indoors most of the time under lights until after the temps get high enough for it to move out.

The one on the right is one I rooted last fall from cuttings, and which had lost all its leaves. I brought it in early January and put it under lights and it is doing well.

The variegated one has "Y"s on it, so I assume it was a cutting from up high on a plant. Does this mean it will flower for me this year? Any thoughts on what color the flowers will be?

They look Great Laura!!
I would say you are surely going to get blooms.
Your just going to have to play the waiting game for the blooms and color.
So Happy for you

Yes it should bloom in the spring with those "Y"s. It looks very healthy and strong. It maybe a Maya. Joan

Your variegated one looks so good. And your cutting will grow so fast you will be shocked! I bet if you fertilize them regularly and keep potting them up as they grow you will get flowers sooner than later.

Thanks, I spotted the new one among a large table of them at my local garden center. They have a spring sale and show every March, and of course I had to go and look at the brugs when I saw them. This one called out "take me!".

I have three of the green cuttings in pots, actually four, but two were tucked into the same pot, so I will have to see if the roots are tangled up when I take them out of their pots. I'm putting them into the ground when the frost danger is past. They were given to me by a friend when I went to help her clean out a bed at her parent's house. Their brug was knocked over during a thunderstorm, and she chopped it back and mulched it, which is apparently how they do it every year and it grows new in the spring.

What color do you think the flowers will be on the variegated one?

They both look sooo healthy... especially that variegated. I would love to find one of those. I love variegated... anything! LOL I am still fighting white flies on my cuttings and they look a bit washed out. They have been outside for almost a week now with temps in the 70's and 80's so hopefully the white flies will be beat.

I can't wait to see those blooms... we will all wait together.

I've had some white fly trouble too, tried spraying with no luck. The newer leaves are looking better though, and the outdoors seems to help. Maybe if I spray them out there rather than where they are inside where they can get hit again it will help. It's probably all the peat in the seedling starts near them.

Gosh Laura, I have plants tell me to take them home all the time. I do not know why my DH does not believe me when I tell him. It is such a common occurrence I hear from so many on Dave's.

Don't be afraid to just cut those 2 brugs apart with a knife. In spring you can get away with all sorts of root pruning and the brugs hardly skip a beat.

I agree with Joan, it probably is Maya or might even be Peaches & Cream. The flowers will most probably be peachy apricot.

I think Bayer Tree and Shrub gets rid of white fly. One dose works up to 1 year. It is great. I think some said it can cause an increase in mite population because it kills off their predators but I haven't had a problem with it. Though I only target treat.

Kell, what an awsome picture of yours, is this a Maya or Peaches and cream?

Laura, last year I underplanted Isabella with Cladiums... I didn't have to wait for them to bloom at the same time Isabella did.. Here is a pic of them just starting to come up.. Naturally, I failed to get a pic when the pot was full... I got carried away taking close up bloom pics! Ahh well, lessons learned.

WoW, lovely! Fingers crossed... I just went back and dug up a pic my friend sent, those will be a single pink bloom. I love peachy colors, so that would be really nice. It also makes me think about where to put them in the new bed!

Here is a photo of the work in progress. Eventually, there will be a fence going just behind where my parrot is sitting, and that bit of space, with the brick chimney sort of sticks out like a sore thumb. I have a smaller hydrangea 'Lady in Red' that is there at the moment, but I could move it forward a bit. I want to plant 2 to 3 of the brugs there, and give away the others to friends or keep them in pots. This is a path to the grill you can see in the back. I just put a trellis in front of it, and I've got more to get to go in there or growing in pots to be planted when I get done mulching this stretch. I started these beds last fall and there just wasn't enough warm weather to finish them up, but I am determined to do it this month. I just need about another 30 bags of mulch and a few more plants, lol! My spare bedroom is full of things waiting to go in, I have lily bulbs, a baby Japanese Maple for further down the left side bed. I have cannas to move on the right side and some nice sage on the way. I'm blathering though...

I just can't wait to see it done! Thanks for all the thoughts! Maybe I should go get another one of these variegated brugs and grow it for trading, lol! I've been drooling over the doubles all winter....

I forgot to ask...what do you all underplant with? Nothing, small things that won't compete? I was hoping to tuck in some annuals under their feet.

Laura

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Burgele, I bought it labeled as P & C but people here felt it was Maya. I am still not sure. LOL. The ID is supposed to rest on how the flowers nod. Well, they nodded every way. LOL. And now we may never know for that brug froze to the dirt and I am tossing it. I have no more room for it anyway.

Gee Laura I wanted to see your parrot but you didn't post the picture. Your space sounds like it will be great. I always thought daylilies would look great under brugs. I have mostly standards or did, LOL, and use all sorts of annuals.

Oh Joyce, I wish I could grow caladiums here, just not hot enough.

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

Oops, [smacking myself on the forehead]. I'll post again this evening when I get home.

Here is the photo of my side yard. The lawn is pretty bad, but the flower beds will be better soon!

Largo is supervising me working, he is on the PVC contraption on the left side.

largo -- What is that sticking out of your chest?

That is his harness...he wears it when he is outside. This picture was taken a few years ago and shows it better. It's one of my favorites of him.

Largosmom, your variegated brug looks just like my Sunset Brug.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WOW Laura, what a beautiful bird. I bet he loves it outside. And how great you have so much room in your sideyard. I bet it gets full fast if hang around with us.

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

I'm sure it will fill up quickly! I have a lot of plants waiting to go out there, so it will start when the weather warms up.

Will there be any way other than blossoms to know what brug I have or should I just assume it is an unnamed hybrid and enjoy it?

Past the grill are a couple of old shrubs that are coming out and a shady area that will get a Japanese Maple or two, and a hosta bed. I will probably have to get more topsoil for that area (more dirt to haul, oh boy!), if only to improve the drainage. I'm also launching an attack on the ivy creeping over from the neighbor's yard. She is unable to get anything done about it, and I have permission to go after it, so that is another project for a long weekend.

My real addiction is the hostas, but this sunny area just would probably burn most of them out. I have more plans for the other sides of the house, heheheh

Largo says "Hiya Bud" and thanks for the compliments.

Hey, Laura.. how is that variegated brug doing. The first picture of that plant was sooo beautifulll perfect. I would love to know how it is doing.

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

Funny you should ask...I've been waiting a day or two to post some new photos.

It lost some leaves due to the cold earlier weather. And, I went back and purchased another for a good friend who gave me cuttings of her brug last fall.

Here you go, however, it's in full bloom! I waited to let the rest of the blooms open up. It has a gorgeous fragrance that reminds me a lot of lilacs, though I haven't noticed it carrying in the air. It's been rainy the last day or two and my nose isn't so good, so it may be stonger than I think it is.

Here is the one I got for my friend, it has one large bud, and some more little ones on it. She comes into town this week, to visit her mom, I'm hoping it will be in bloom for her. It will have to stay at her mom's until such time as she can get it, so it will be double gifted, I suppose!

Wow, that is a beautiful healthy plant. they do not sell brugs anywhere here. I sure wish they did. Mind if I ask how much that beautiful plant cost from a nursery where you actually get to pick out what you want? Just interested in know what they sell for other than on line where you get a little sprig.

Tammie, this is a picture of Maya when I pulled it out of the shipping tube, I purchased from www.Seedsprout.com

wow! I take my comment back. That is beautiful for a shipped plant. I may have to get myself one of those! Thank you for posting.

They were only $12.95, and I think the first one I bought was at least 25 % off as there was a special event going on.

I just wish our stores carried them.. any type would be good. We only get 1 kind of daylilies here too... yellow. Occasionally and orange shows up. That is all at all the nurseries and stores.

Holy Moly, ZZsBabiez! That's amazing that it was shipped to you in such fantastic shape! I'm impressed.

I just ordered one today... will see how it looks... hope it is as nice as yours ZZ!

I just could not wait... I really love variegated anything.

Tammie

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I got my Maya.. ZZ it is 1/2 the size yours was... Just 3 leaves at the top of the single stem but I potted it and it is starting to grow. That is one thing they know how to do well, grow. I had a Gabriel I rooted and potted a few days ago.. it was growing like gang busters until I squatted too close to the pot and broke the top half off... now just a little stick in the pot... it sure will put out a lot of branches now if it survives. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!

Tammie

... I almost cried. I do have faith since my Texas Pink actually survived 2 days of ice and snow.
