CLOSED: A wasp of some kind?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Looks kinda like what I call "dirt dobbers"... but without the light yellow. And do they sting?

Could the white be a mutation from yellow? In Cincinnati anything yellow and black is a bee. It is a wasp and all can sting repeatedly.

It's a Mason Wasp, Monobia quadridens

claypa,

Thanks! That's definately it... And according to the wikipedia... is the same as my "dirt dauber"...

Now, I have no idea of their stinging ability... my mother use to tell me that "dirt daubers" didn't bite... but those were like solid black I think.

Any how... thanks for solving this.

You're welcome! But, now I'm not so sure... there's a wasp that mimics the Monobia called Euodynerus bidens, that has white patches where I can't see on your wasp... take a look:

Dirt daubers WILL sting - to protect themselves. However, they don't defend their nest like the yellow jackets and hornets. They are solitary, not communal. So, you leave it alone and it will leave you alone.

I had a mud dauber come in my open closet window (I used a small bedroom as my closet) and build nests on the wall all one summer. They are the LEAST likely to sting of all wasps, from what I read, because all they care about is that nest. The freaky part is them stuffing all those tubes with paralyzed spiders!

There also is a nest robber that comes along after the tubes are sealed, kicks out the mud dauber's egg, and stuffs her own in there to feast on the spiders!

They could make a horror film of the whole thing!

claypa,

Well... I dunno. It hasn't been back to visit since I took the picture. It came flying out of the green house once right at me but didn't hit me... and that was after I had been blasting it with the hose all day long.
