Crozet, VA

So far this week I have found three different items that I plan to use for this exchange. So funny the little things that we buy and then never use. I have a load of those types of things. I hope that a lot more people will sign up or re- sign up.

Thank you so much Nancy for starting this exchange and also to Holly for the rooting jar one. What fun this is. I think that you guys are all so great!!!

I hope that everyone will have a good weekend.

Ruby, I originally got the plant from work. I work at the headquarters of Giant Foods in Carlisle & they had a Floral sale in the building, so I got the ivy. Mine is growing outside (quite hardy here in PA in a sheltered spot), and growing up the lattice of our car port. I also have it growing in pots in the greenhouse, for insurance. I thought that we were assigned names to send garden whimsies to. I sent mine to Gail.

Ruby, I'm going to Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh on Thursday. I'll check out their gift shop for some whimsical things there. Judy

Thanks Button. I will plant it so that it can trail up. I love seeing the roots beginning. I get a thrill each time that I look at it.

I am hoping that some more folks will sign their names on the garden whimsy list. I want to add my name again, but not so close to my first one. I am finding all these really cute things that I bought because they were cute (and cheap) and have never used them here. So folks, I want to put my name over there a few more times. Come on everyone, come on everyone.

Cedarnest, yours is ready to go to post office for postage tomorrow. I hope that you will find a use for it and enjoy it. I had a choice of three things and for some reason decided on this one for you. I thought that your telling your interests on the Address Exchange was great, even though I didn't particularly send anything from it. ha-ha

Let's encourage some more people to sign up for this. It is so much fun. Don't you love receiving things in the mail?

I have to ask: WHERE DO YOU BUY ROOTING JARS?

I remember lots of years ago when you could get those clear glass hanging ornaments that were meant just for starting cuttings but I can't find them anywhere anymore. Is that what you all mean by rooting jars?

Any jar can be a rooting jar. Usually they are clear or colored glass so you can see the roots growing. But sometimes it can be a ceramic cup or vase. Look into your refrigerator for an unusual shape jar. I have mustard jar that is a good size for rooting smaller starts and it is square, really cute. I'm using a glass votive for a rooting jar for some of my smaller starts too. Then I have some taller jars a mini wine carafe for the taller and longer starts then I have a really cute hanging jar. Flea markets and yard sales are a great place to get interesting jars. You can get pretty beads or use old jewelry you don't wear to dress them up a little, too. Here are a few I use.

Oh, I see what you're all doing Holly. I was still trying to find those old(er) glass blown shapes with holes precut in them. Do you wire the tops for hanging on some of them?

A couple of months ago we did this rooting jar exchange. We had so much fun doing it that we decided to do this Garden Whimsey exchange. We will probably be doing another jar exchange in the fall. Some of the exchangers that were in warmer areas sent along cutting to go in the jars, too. This link will take you back so you can see what we did. There are all different kinds of jars and some of the exchangers really had cute ideas. Someone even had one of those old swans much like you are talking about. Hope you enjoy reading the thread and join us for the next exchange. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/693131/
