CLOSED: Is there a kids trading forum?

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

My granddaughter wants to trade some seeds with other kids, is there a forum at Dave's for this?
Robin

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

I think its illegal to trade children!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Darn it then!! I was thinking about trading in my 4 year old for an 18 year old that could did holes for me this weekend!!! LOL!!!

Nicole

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Not that I know of but, but how young is she? can we pull one over on here and let her think one of us is a child? I would send her seeds with my GD name on them she is 5 but not close enough to do personal trades...
Susan

My 20 year old was helping me today rack the weeds I was pulling so no one gets him...LOL

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Susan, Could I at least borrow him for a weekend? My GD is 10 this month and is anxious to get out to start a garden and she loves all the trades I've been doing. I really don't think she would mind what age anybody is, she just wants to trade and get something different that she wants. lol

Since they won't let me trade her on here maybe I can trade her GF. whatya think?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Robyn - Does she like butterflies? If so, I have some different seeds for butterfly host plants!

Southern, United States

I'll trade with her too Robin, what's she interested in?

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I've told her to make up a list of what she wants and I will throw in my list of haves with hers, she only has a few. I will post it on here. I think mostly what she is looking for is black, dark colored. purple or chocolate. flowers. Of course that could have changed. Thanks for wanting to trade with her. I'm just so excited that she wants to keep gardening with me.

Southern, United States

Uh-oh, I don't have anything "chocolate", black or dark colored lol. I do have some mixed daylily and sunflowers and a few other things if she would like that. I'm sorry :(

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I have a few dark colors and if you dmail me and send me your address I can have her a nice package sent on Monday...also in the dmail let me know what other colors she likes ok? It is great to have younger ones want to help.. Now when my youngest is working and I need help I go to my sisters and pull her 16 year old and he is always more then willing to help Aunt Sue...LOL
Hugs,
Susan

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Robyn, I'd be happy to send her seeds for SASBE. I just got a bonus packet of very dark hollyhocks that I can't use (rabbit food here!), and I'm sure I can find some other goodies for her. I'm in the address exchange, or Dmail me for my address.

With the SASBE offers, you might sit down with her and have her help with the postage, maybe include a little note along the lines of "Thank you for sharing your extra seeds. I like dark chocolate colored flowers and anything purple!" I know she'd probably enjoy doing trades even more, but I think she'd get a kick out of sending out an envelope and having it come back with seeds... and my seed stash is pretty full, so while I'm not unwilling to trade I'd rather do SASBE.

Just so I know what she can use... Is she starting seeds inside with you (I have some cute little purple peppers), or does she just need seeds that she can direct sow (I'll find her an extra pinch of purple basil, and 'Pink Candles' celosia has some purple on the foliage even if the flowers are pink).... ??

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Here is a list of some of the things she wants, but don't worry I fully expect that I will have to order these. She wants.
Black roses, Tulip tree, Japanese dwarf Maple, Blue girl Rose, Repeat daffodils, Asiatic Lily=Capuchino, Skagit Valley Tulip, Any Peonies, Tall purple or Blue flowers for sun, something called a Blue Heron, Sunflowers, daylilies any or dark orange with brown or black and pink. Yes she loves to watch butterflies and hummingbirds, just like her Nana.

She has for trade purple coneflower, purple columbine, foxglove mix, old fashioned hollyhocks, Batchelors buttons, lavender zebra mallow, Larkspur mix, Butterfly weed.

She has made up thank you cards to send everyone who helps her.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Robyn - I don't know what butterflies your GD gets in her zone and region of the country. I have Cassia (Sulphur Butterfly host plant), Scarlet Milkweed (Monarch host plant), Passionvine (Swallowtail, Zebra Longwing, and Gulf Fritillary host plant), I also have some unknown daylily seeds I can share (meaning they were no-name varieties given to me in a trade and I am just going to grow several of them for fun! I have no idea of the colors of the flowers), I also have some Sunflower seeds I can share with her. Let me know if she wants all of these or just some of them. :-)

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

becky, I know we get the monarch and the swallowtail and the sulphur, I'm not sure about the two. But we'll find out, I'm sure she would want all of them. (right under her bedroom window). I appreciate you helping her. This should keep her busy for a while.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

I want to trade with the little girl. I have none of my own!
I have a gazillion kinds of sunflowers, including one that gets 15 feet tall.
Also, tulip tree seedlings.
And wouldn't she love to have some Vermont Appaloosa bean seeds?

I'd take the columbines, the bachelor buttons & the larkspur mix.

Southern, United States

I also have some sunflowers, Teddy Bear and Citrus. I have mixed daylilies and a couple of named crosses. I have some sweet pea mixes and some blue flax. I would take the lavender zebra mallow and old fashioned hollyhocks.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Summer and Princess, it's a trade. I go to town Tuesday so I will mail It out then. Then list she gave me last night was just a quikie, the list she gave me today was 3 pages long. Most every flower she could find. Mostly blue, purple, black and some pink. She isn't much of a pink type girl.

What in the world is Appaloosa beans? Sunflowers, goody goody. We love them all sizes and shapes and colors.

Becky, will send a be out to you Tues. also.

DGers are the best.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

You'll have to wait & see on the Appaloosa beans! Your girl's tastes are right up my alley. I don't do pink either so I'll have LOTS to share that she'll like.

How exciting! I remember how Dad would let us order $5 worth of seeds from the Gurney catalog and of course we'd get the 1-cent Kids' Jumbo pack, and we had our own little plot to tend.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

This girl goes to town on planting seeds in the garden, planting and picking are her favorite things. When she was littler she used to pick the blooms off the veges cause they were so pretty. We had a hard time convincing her that she had to leave them on to get the food.

Too bad they don't still have those kids packs.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Princess d-mail me your address, please.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Robyn - Please print this post out and include it in the Bubble Envie that you send me or type out what seeds you want me to send to your granddaughter. (It helps me to keep things straight as I do a lot of trades and SASE. lol)

Were you able to find out what butterflies are found in her area?

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

robin, i have a few Japanese dwarf Maple, and i think i just got in choc vine. i had some together for her but i see she has a few of them now so i will go through again and find some different things and send them in your swap. kali likes alot of the same things as me i think that is so neat!! i will keep checking this post to make sure i don't send the same as others do for her.
silkie

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Silkie, I'll finish filling your SASBE while I'm finding some goodies for Robyn, should have both out in the next day or two... thanks for your patience, gives me time to dig through my stash!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

awe, thanks so much i appreciate it!! not a problem at all.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

not to worry -- there's no way for that red BE to get lost in my "outgoing trades" box! :-)

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks Mary, You and the boys have a separate baggie in the swap be. I found a few extra things for them to grow. have fun with them.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Becky, I looked up the common MO butterflies for our area here is the list
Admirals, Emperors, Leafwing, Most Longwing (including the Gulf Frit.), Snouts, most true Brushfoots, and milkweed lovers. I've tried digging up the natural milkweeds in the area, but the roots go forever, and the dirt is rock hard. Heck here in the Ozarks we grow the best rocks in the midwest. The dirt is really a red clay and the milks love this. Needless to say my efforts were fruitless in transplanting them. I'm never where I could collect seeds from them at the right time. So all those you mentioned would be great for her to grow in her little (it's up to 25 feet long now) garden. She has big plans and big eyes. Don't know if my shoveling can handle it. lol I'm going to have to get my tiller fixed or drive 140 miles north to my sisters and borrow theirs.

Southern, United States

Robin tell your grandaughter I put her seeds in the mail this morning so to be on the look out for them!

fran

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Thank you Fran, I'll tell her. Yours will be in the mail tomorrow morning.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Robyn - Thanks for looking up your area butterflies. I will add seeds for plants that will host some of those butterflies. And I will throw in some nectar plant seeds as well. I love gardening for butterflies. For your info, my passion for gardening was sparked in the Fall of 2004 after my area was devastated by Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. At the elementary school that I work at, we got a grant to put in some gardens and our class decided to do a butterfly garden. It helped to calm a lot of children who were afraid of every rain storm for a while in the Fall and Winter of that year.

Let me tell you .... we have LOTS of butterflies floating around our school now and most of them hang out or lay their eggs on our host plants in our garden patch. My students are hooked on gardening for butterflies, ladybugs, and birds. My students are much younger than your GD, but the older kids at our school enjoy it and come help us with our garden quite often, so I know your GD will do a great job on her patch of garden! My students are what inspired me to add a butterfly garden at my own home. :-)

Becky, that is so cool. We don't have hurricanes, but we do have tornados. We've had a few close calls, Unfortunately we only get about 10 minutes of warning at best, sometimes it's only 1 to 2 minutes. It scares Kali.

We had a bad ice storm in January, that was scary, limbs and branches were breaking all over the place. We lost electric and only had a fireplace to keep us all warm. It was freezing inside and out. Took the electric company 9 days to get it back on.

I'm sure your huricanes are alot worse than what we have here. Bless you for helping the little ones out.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Robyn - As much as I dislike the hurricanes, I think that tornadoes and ice storms would not be much fun either and you get little warning for those. Scary for sure! Actually, a lot of the damage of 2004 was caused by tornadoes spawned by the hurricanes in my area. When we were hit by those hurricanes, we lost power for 5 weeks total between those 2 hurricanes. Which was bad because the temps were unusually high & very humid and it was hard to keep cool. We had to dunk our little dog into the bathtub several times a day to keep him from overheating. And we would hose ourselves down as well or take cold showers. It was absolutely miserable. But I would imagine "freezing" without power would NOT be preferable over heat. I missed "ice" and having cold drinks during the power outage. LOL! I think I sweated off a total of 10 pounds during those weeks! lol Amazing what the human body can tolerate to survive. :-)

Robyn - Here's a great website that lists butterflies for your state which I just happened to find while doing an internet search:
http://www.thebutterflysite.com/missouri-butterflies.shtml

AND ..... there is a great forum here on DG for Butterfly and Hummingbird gardening (which is where I hang out a lot! lol):

Wish we could have a season or two without any bad bad weather. But I know it's not possible.

This will be our first butterfly/hummer garden, so that link will come in very handy. I'll have to lurk around it for a while so I can learn a few things. Next to healthy plants for the critters, presentation is the key. Thanks.

All the be's went out today. Thank you all for everything.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Oh my goodness, I got Kali's trade packet today, what a charming thing!

I can't believe she sent me a hand-beaded bracelet done on an Indian-style loom. Since my family is part Native American, it is much appreciated. It is REALLY lovely.

Best trader ever!

My seeds will go out Monday.

I, too, got Kali's SASBE today. And she also included a very nice handmade beaded bracelet and a Belly Button Duster (LOL!) along with a very cute hand-made Thank You card. What a sweet young lady! Robyn, your granddaughter was raised right! Very considerate and thoughtful! Though ... she didn't have to send all of that, I was happy to just send her seeds because I am thrilled we have another "future" environmentalist and a new gardener among us. I love to see and hear of children who get interested in gardening and the creatures that are attracted to their gardens.

I will be sending her seeds out tomorrow. I hope they all germinate for her and attract LOTS of caterpillars and butterflies! My classroom of students love our caterpillars and the adult butterflies. We raise some of them in cages to enjoy the morphing life cycle of different butterflies. And then release the butterflies back out into our garden. Here is a website for cages I use in my classroom:
(The cages are currently on sale.)
http://www.butterfly-gifts.com/1602-butterfly-house.html
And a book I highly recommend for children her age on raising butterflies is called "The Family Butterfly Book" by Rick Mikula. Here is his website:
http://butterflyrick.com/
Perhaps something she might want to try in the future. It's fascinating to watch them grow from a tiny egg, to a caterpillar, to morphing into a chrysalis, and then into the beautiful adult butterflies! Monarch butterflies are the easiest to hand-raise. It's very easy to do!!! ♥

Please tell her thank you for me for the lovely bracelet, cute belly button cleaner, and beautiful card. :-) She should get my seeds sometime late next week. Good luck with her new garden!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Here is a link to the Butterfly book that Kali might enjoy. It tells all about how to raise them in student terms and has great photos:
http://thenaturestore.com/zz3515.htm

I don't know if you could find it on amazon.com for cheaper. Possibly. :-) The info packed into this book, it is worth it for the retail price. (And no! I am not in any way affiliated with Rick or the publishing company. lol!)

Just some suggestions. :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Robyn, I didn't make it down to the mailbox before the mail came today... in my defense, there was slush falling from the sky!

I'm wearing my pretty bracelet and admiring it as I fool with seeds and seedlings (inside!) this afternoon. What a thoughtful gift! Thank you!

Since I still had her BE on my desk, a few additional seed packets jumped in. I thought it wasn't a bad idea that somebody had above, to list what we were sending so she'd get a good assortment.... I started to type in a list, and then I wondered if she'd rather be surprised... what do you think?

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Becky, Thanks for the links. Weve watched 'cats' before and loved it. I will send for that book, it will help alot.
Kali is enjoying this so much. I haven't seen her this excited in a long time. Winter and cabin fever have set in.
She has made 2 more garden. (on paper) I guess we'll have to work outside this weekend.

Critter, you didn't have to add extra. She wanted to do something special for all of you. She is liking the surprises. I got a swap enve today and she tried to claim it for herself. She really is getting into this gardening fun. She knows it can be work, she's helped before and still comes back for more.

If you all ever knew how much this really means to me and Kali, you'd guess that I have tears running down my cheeks. Thank you all so much.
