4 o'clock best scent cultivar?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Chantell, LOL! The roots from one single plant wouldn't fit in either of the flat rate boxes! And there is no way you could ship them as media -- three plants' roots would be as big as a set of encyclopedias, but not nearly as heavy.

If you start with seeds, start with Four O'Clocks and Nasturtiums in the spring. I seriously don't think yo can go wrong.

They are both big seeds and easy to handle, just like sunflowers Just push Nasturtiums into the soil with your finger til they are deep enough to be covered, like sunflowers, and Four O'Clocks about 1/2 way into the soil so they are planted, but still exposed. Plant both of them 24-36" apart and you will be amazed!

Yes, you can also wintersow them, but then you need to transfer them and that's got a margin of error.

ha ha -- They look like pussycats!

"The roots from one single plant wouldn't fit in either of the flat rate boxes" Ok...now THAT'S just scary!! I can even get yucca roots in those boxes...LOL. I shall name the 4 O'clocks "Seymor" ROTFLOL Well let's just hope those babies I got with my order from Flower Scent Gardens do well for me...no flowers yet on them...patiently wating.
Pussycats? Actually they really are.

Chantell.... the sunflowers i planted are WAAAAY behind my house, by the highway fence... i do have a pooch to scare the bunnies away... but since he is fenced in [to keep the coyote out] he can't get to the bunnies all the time... plus they munch at night.

as Suzy mentioned... you can WS the 4'O-clocks -- for me, transplanting is hit or miss... they dont do well for me if transplanted.... what i did this year... since i got yellow seeds from a gal... i sowed it in a "peat pot" and just plunked it in the ground once it was warm enough outside.... i did it that way so i knew which one was yellow and didnt pull it out of the ground when the other thousand magentas germinated. [i haven't sown any magenta seeds in 2 years.... they just keep coming back from the seeds that fall the season before]

and Morning Glories -- I did them this year and WOW i had about 75 of'em.... sadly, the bunnies about about 65.
but they WS very easily.

Beautiful dogs! What breed is the brown one in the middle?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Think I'll go with ya'lls advice re the WS - these postal increases are making things a tad more challenging unfortunately.

tcs1366 - goodness you much have "healthy" bunnies with them eating all your pretties...you'd think the coyotes would be keeping them away. :(

zville123 - thank you! "Wolfie" was adopted from a rescue originally thought to be an Akita mix but now thought to be a Dutch Shepard mix. He's a good boy!!

Chantell, sorry I'm repeating myself. I just got back from 2 weeks vacation and trying to catch up. Meant to tell someone on rose forum about the Jap. beetles, but eveyone seems to know. The tubers on the full grown 4 o'clocks are very big as Suzy says, but I have some little ones that have volunteered in the yard that shouldn't take up much space. How about I send you some baby tubers to get started with and some of the 3 kinds of seed that I have. I also agree that they are very easy to grow from seed as are nastursums. I am seed sowing challenged also. I do not have a high success rate so far, but I also finally got Moonflowers to grow this year . Rudbekia is another of my few success. Just throw them on some roughed up dirt and water, they'll grow .I like your trade list. I am growing a lot of tropicals lately and would love some of the banana tree, or tuberose. I have lots of 4 o'clock seed , lots. Anyone that would like some just send me a d-mail.

Bump ...I thought you might like to have a look at my 4 0'clocks nothing special ...just the old fashioned "broken colours, but here they are 6/8ft tall and smother out weeds ...all the while looking beautiful, one of those happy flowers that make you smile, oh and the perfume ...a mix of citrus and jasmine, mmmmmm but you need a bit of warmth and humidity to bring it out ...nightime and morning.

Oh, Lord, it would give new meaning to self sowing, wouldn't it?

Getting back to the original question, I have heard that the somewhat unattractive Miribilis longiflora is the most highly scented, but I have never grown it and don't know if that is true.

I grow it and it does have a wonderful smell. But you do have to be out at night to enjoy it. It also has the most beautiful flowers. We call it shooting stars.

I received a few of the Mirabilis longflora seeds from a DG friend who knew I loved 4 O'Clocks. She told it has the best fragrance. I can't wait to sow them. I heard they get rather tall. Does anyone have a full photo of one? I am trying to figure out where would be the best place to plant the seeds.

Also, I am going to grow some Mirabilis viscosa. I am thinking of growing it in a pot. Does anyone have a photo of a full grown plant. Having never grown either of these, I am not sure what to expect.

Thanks in advance! :-)

Thanks, Marie! How tall are they?

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hmm good qustion mine did not really grow tall (12-18 inches) as much as they spread out.. But then again they were taken out by the cats and the over grown puppy we had.

OH Becky !! check out this picture
http://www.fireflyforest.com/flowers/whites/white75.html

i've tried doing a search on height and one site said 3'
http://www.plantsofthesouthwest.com/cgi-bin/plantview.cgi?_recordnum=1144

but the top one said 5'.

seems to be a "southwest" plant.

here was my google attempt.

Thank you, tcs! I had tried doing a goggle, but for some reason I didn't get what you got! The longflora looks like an interesting plant. I have heard the scent is wonderful.

I wonder if the Mirabilis viscosa has a fragrance? Has anyone grown this cultivar of 4 O'Clocks?
