I don't know if all abelias need the same care but I only cut off any dead twigs on my abelias - Frances Mason.

I think that the reason anything needs "prunning", is, that its too large for the spot that it is in.Just a thaught, Mike

Abelias flower on new growth so you won't be eliminating this year's flowers by pruning now. If the bushes are not leggy or too large for the site then there's no need to prune. A little light pruning may help keep it fuller and you may get more flowering but you don't need to cut back hard like you do butterfly bush and some other summer flowering shrubs.

But I think this is a good shrub to whack back once every 3-5 years. At least, that's what I did with mine a few years ago, and they really formed up nice. Admittedly, mine are growing in pretty dense shade and tend to become rather straggly (and big) over time.

I agree with Scott. A very light trim-back can keep it looking neat. I've seen them trimmed into perfect globes in planters but I found the blooms to be lost in the shape. I trimmed mine by taking out some of the old stems and very light tip trimming.
