Can I root cuttings?

Hi.

I have a Vinca major 'Variegata' (recently identified for me by DG members). It came in hanging baskets that we bought a few years ago. I didn't realize it was a perennial. Anyway, 2 have survived in spite of me. According to the plant file, this is usually a ground cover, but it is absolutely fantastic cascading out of hanging baskets - making streamers 6 or more feet long.

What I would like to do is take cuttings and propogate 16 more plants for this summer's baskets (4 in each basket along with petunias) But . . . according to the Plantfile, my only options are root divisions or semi-hardwood cuttings.

I have some new growth starting . . . what do you think? Should I clip some and dip in rooting compound? Or will this hurt the plant?

Vinca layers itself so readily that I'd be surprised if you couldn't get cuttings to root... they might even root in water.

If your vinca is outside where it could encounter more freezing temps, then I wouldn't take cuttings... new cut ends seem to be vulnerable to cold damage on some plants, although I don't know for sure about vinca, and it does seem like a pretty tough plant.

No, I always brought it in during the winter because I assumed it was an annual! Okay, we will try water rooting with one piece and see how that goes . .

Roots easy in water, inside
