Hi I am wondering if any of you belong to The Species Lily Preservation Group? I am curious about how often bulbs are available for sale and the cost etc. I was thinking about ordering from Hill Keep http://www.hillkeep.ca/bulbs%20lilium.htm in the next couple years, but they stopped taking small orders and now have a minimum of $350 per order. The overseas places such as Rareplants http://www.rareplants.co.uk/prodtype.asp?cookiecheck=yes&PT_ID=114&strPageHistory=cat have high shipping costs. I know there is that China place Chen Yi http://home.no.net/chenyi/ but she sells small bulbs, well anyway...
Enjoy the snow, errrrrr not

SLPG
I'm a member. Their list is rather short and normally just in the fall but they did offer a few this spring. I ordered 3 pumilum "Golden Gleam" bulbs. They are not real cheap, typically 3/$17-$20 or a bit more and always sold by the 3's. Because their conservator, Ed McRae, fell ill last year, they are looking for new conservators to take over the work. I strongly suspect that the species offered by PNWLS in the current sales brochure is actually SLPG bulbs. The varieties and prices look similar.
Their most recent newsletter provides a list of other sources and I emailed them about buggycrazy as she carries a pretty good selection. They also offered a list of sources for specific species so if you are looking for something in particular I can look into it....
Well Hill Keep had a number of them that would have been nice to acquire but I thought I would try something that is easy to grow like Maculatum, Concolor and Dauricum.
Thank you
Why not just grow those from seed, or is that getting too scary around your place?
I don't want too many body snatcher pods around :*)
Well I suppose I could, I thought it would be nice to have some around to hybridize with in the near future.

Yes, bulbs will get you there faster. Unfortunately I don't see a U. S. source for any of these in the SLPG list of vendors:( PNWLS sale has all three but pricey when you have to order by lots of 3 bulbs. No phyto for import though.
The new NALS seed list has loads of dauricum and concolor seed, but no maculatum/wilsonii. Sale open to nonmembers April 1. In the meantime I will be stocking up on some of these specie seeds and others.
LOL - bodysnatchers!
I am a member also. The thing about seed is you will know you can produce true species seed from your plants because each plant grown from seed is different, and therefore will pollinize another. I have always thought that if you buy bulbs, you are risking getting clones, no matter how many you buy. Clones, of course, will not pollinize each other.
On the other hand, if you only want to pollinize with onther species or hybrids, than that doesn't matter.
How would I purchase seed from the NALS seed list?

The seed list is open to everyone on April 1st, regardless if you are a member.

Hi,
Pard is that $17-$20 divided by 3 or multiply by 3?
Divided by 3:) Hope I didn't scare you. I should add that the NALS seed list is open to nonmembers from April 1 through the end of May. It is a HUGE list, about 25 pages long this year.
Divided sounds awesome :*) What do seeds go for usually?
All packets of 25 seeds go for $1.00. Some may have less than that but that is in the description so the buyer knows. Unsold seed comes up for sale again the next year for 50 cents a pack. There are always lots left over and I always look at that list first. It is kept in a freezer (one of the requirements to qualify for seedchair is to have a separate freezer for the seed). There is a limit of 30 packs of current year's seed but no limit on the previous year's seed. They also put a few of what they consider real premo seed in an auction. One year I bid $15 on one pack (not even 25 sds) and I didn't win! Also, the list is sorted by division and alphbetical to make things easier:)
