Well, here are a few of my first blooms. I had some of these last year. I dug the tulips up and kept them in a cool drawer all summer and put them in the fridge during winter and planted them in mid January and they look good. I don`t plant them until Jan or Feb because they might sprout too early and get frozen with our sometimes unpredictable weather. This year I will dig them, store them the same way giving them about 10 weeks in the fridge and then plant in Jan or Feb.
I`m unsure how to treat the daffodils and hyacinths. I left some daffodils in the ground last year but haven`t seen that kind yet. They did bloom later than the ones I planted this year. I`ll wait and see.
This is red and white tulips with blue hyacinths.
More first blooms
Very, very pretty! Can you believe this is the first year I will have tulips! Never planted them before. But last fall I bought some mixed bags at Walmart and they are peeking through the ground. I'm excited to see what I got from the mixed bags! I just can't believe it took me this long to plant tulips. Yours look lovely.
Sherry
Thanks! These have been fun.
gardener2005, That is quite the voluptuous double yellow , it is almost obscene! Do you have a name? I don't love all the doubles, but this one is so grand. I think I would call her, Mae West. I admire your work to get them to bloom in your zone.
rox_male, That is a nice stand of iris danfordiae & iris reticulata. Did you plant that many who have they spread for you. Thanks, Patti
Those big yellow ones are already my favorite. They came in a double daffodil collection from Brecks. That one is called Blonde Beauty ? I think. You`re pretty close to Mae West there! The bright fluffy yellow is lovely with the fuschia pink azaleas. I do hope these stay around and multiply!
Thanks, I will be looking for it when the fall catalogs come out. The deer or rabbits just eat all my azalea buds.grrrrrrr Patti
gardener2005: What a beautiful collection of Spring blooms you have in your garden. I agree with bbrookrd that the double Daffodil is gorgeous! I enjoyed looking at all the bright bold colors and can "almost" smell them.....
rox_male: Lovely Iris reticulata and danfordiae. It's so nice to have these beauties blooming now, especially since the temps are still very cold. It was just the "pick me up" that I needed.
gardener2005, Such synchronicity. I got an ad in the mail from Breck's for a daffodil collection which included
BLOND BEAUTY... Strong 16-18" stems are crowned in early to mid-spring with 3-4" golden yellow blooms. Springtime's deep, luscious greens will provide a stunning background for the radiant glow of this elegant charmer. Blooms early to mid-spring.
I got that advertisement in the mail too. My experience ordering bulbs like tulip, hyacinth and daffodils from Brecks has always been great. So far so good. I always give people a good word when it is deserved. :)
It is the Deluxe double daffodil collection. There are no complaints here! I hope my climate is good for them and they make it here. The others from last year are poking through the soil so they look like they are making it.
I also recommend any Darwin hybrid tulips and the hyacinths from Brecks were lovely too this year. Here is a small bed I did with all three.
Those are the bulblets off the darwin hybrids from last year. They did good for baby bulbs and I`m going to see if they grow a larger size and see if I can propogate these. Some of the really small ones just have leaves but I think that is normal and the bulb is growing so it will bloom next year. That would be fun if I can raise these and save some dollars. :)
