MGJapan - The photo that you posted here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3257009
shows a nice Scarlett O'Hara...much nicer than what is usually seen for this cultivar...

Did you happen to collect seeds from that particular plant(?)...

Ron

Houston, TX

Ron,

The picture was borrowed from (our friend) to show and answer a question but the solid red Scarlett O'Hara seeds are available here but I didn't think they were desirable.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

MGJapan - the SOH with completely solid throats and tubes are of interest...most of the seed available produces plants with white throats and tubes and this is not the original type...

The original all red is a classic named after the character Scarlett O'Hara in Margaret Mitchell's novel that was the basis for the classic 1939 movie "Gone With The Wind"...the all red throats have almost 'gone with the wind' too...

I have SOH strains from 1962 and 1967 that have solid red tubes that are being multiplied this season by several MG enthusiasts...

I've previously tried SOH from sealed Sakata and Takii packs and they produced white tubes just like the seeds from commercial sources here...although a few scattered plants with solid red tubes from commercial sources still appear sporadically 'here'n'there'...

If you have SOH seeds that definitely produce solid red throats and tubes,I would be interested to trade for some to increase the genetic diversity of the seedstock...

Thanks for the interesting analogy and history of SOH. They really didn't appeal to me but that thinking has been altered thanks to you. I'm still in the learning mode regarding which MG seeds to collect and the all red SOH will definite be added to the buy list.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

MGJapan You are Welcome!

I have a question for you. Do the Japanese like the white throated flowers better?(Off the SOH topic..sorry.)

I`m curious because I see this so much.

As far as SOH being popular they are popular but they are so common and wide spread that you can buy them very cheap like a .30 cents for a pack of seeds. Some people don`t care how much they cost and some people want to grow different, rare and more unusual vines while they pass on the more common varieties like SOH and Heavenly blue. Perhaps a improved more like the Heirloom SOH could help them make a comeback?

People mess with the flowers trying to get something "different and unusual" because people will not go buy something that reseeds itself every year and they see it in everyone elses yard getting sprayed with weedkiller. That doesn`t help any.:) And then people want the heirlooms because the "new and improved" stuff gets old. It is almost like clothes going in and out of style with the garden plants! That is imho and nothing meant to heavily impact the discussion. Ignore my rambling please....

Ron, Do you suppose the red flower in the Old Glory mix is SOH? I`m growing some this year.

As far as the SOH improvement project. It is very possible to plant these far enough apart so you can compare and keep the best representatives of the SOH while pulling up and throwing out the rogues as long as they aren`t tangled in with anything else. You could deadhead the flowers that do not look right if the vine is tangled in something else.

Sorry but I don't know the answer to your question 'Do the Japanese like the white throated SOH flowers better' When I visit the stores the SOH racks are always full as if no one is buying except for one type which they always seems to be out of. Spring break ends today so it's back to work for me. I'll be online later tonight. TTY.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Oh no, the SOH isn`t a white throated flower. Some people mistakenly claim a white throated flower or one that is solid light pink is a SOH.

I meant flowers that are supposed to have a white throat. I have been looking around and see that many of the large flowered Japanese morning glories do have this. I suppose it is a good feature in the ones that are supposed to have it.

Karen - It seems that many mixes portray a large red flower that varyingly 'resembles' a SOH...but I can't vouch for what they actually contain...

The SOH plants with the all red tubes and throats that I've grown have an overall structure that most closely resembles the original but more pink colored cultivar "Candy Pink"...

Thanks Ron. I`ll grow it out and take some pictures.

Thanks ByndeweedBeth for the package you sent us. Yesterday I had a guess teacher fill in for me and told her to let the students take what ever they wanted from the package. They left me some lillies so that's cool.

We have what we need regarding MG but there are things in the USA that we would like to have and will trade you rare JMG for it.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

MGJ, give me an idea of what you are looking for, I'll see what I have that I can send.

Houston, TX

Happytrail128, thank you very much for the wonderful package of goodies from USA. It was exactly what we wanted and then some. Let us know if you're looking for something special from Japan and we'll accommodate

MGJapan,

Just wanted to let you know that several of the seeds you sent have germinated and some have two leaves already.. will take photos later on in the next couple of days. The fastest growing so far is Capetown Pink is already vining onto the top of my lights. Thank you again.

A.

Houston, TX

Gourd, wow, that's great news and you are welcome. I'm still in the planning stages and will start germinating 120 different types maybe this weekend. I ordered some hydrogen peroxide online and is waiting for it to arrive.

How much water did you use with peroxide in germination mixture? I'm trying this for the first time.

Mesilla Park, NM

Oh god, why did I know someone would ask about the peroxide... I never have measured it.. but it appears to me to be about 3 tablespoons to 8 oz of water... I use superthrive in the water too, a vitamin B hormone. If you have any Miracle Grow or any type of fert.. put a little bit in the water also if you do not have superthrive. I do use heating mats and domes..

You can use seran wrap if you do not have domes, also there is a cling wrap that you can use to seal a container by rubbing it on and it saves tons of seran wrap.. it is called Press'N Seal by Glad.. really neat stuff. I've used it on several plastic cups and the nice thing about this is that you can reuse it, and cut it in sections with the scissors too, so you do not waste a thing.

What type of set up do you have now, lights, heatmats, domes, etc..??

A.

Houston, TX

Now we can start sowing in the grown where I live. The cherry blossoms have started to bloom in my area and we are 70-80 degree in temp now. I have a few that was started inside that I moved outside last weekend and they're doing fine. I did not use any type of artificial lighting. Just 8 inch pots near a window and they sprouted OK. I soaked the seeds in plain water until they swelled up. I want to try the peroxide method on some of the rare seeds I purchased. Thanks and I'll keep you guys posted.

Sounds like the season has started! - Arlan

Houston, TX

Yes it has and the garden shops in my area will start selling MG seedlings next month. I plan to buy a lot of those too.

Houston, TX

Thanks Jody,

We got the Brazilian morning glory seeds today. I'll be growing these and compare to some others that were purchased here in Japan.

Also thanks for your kindness in sending the bonus seeds

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

bettygail - what I'd be interested in is for someone to contact the people in vietnam and see if there is some way to trade seeds with them...also don't want to hijack this thread...

See if your friends would be able to set up any trades for MG's from vietnam...

Here is a 2004 photo of mini-sky blue I grew.

Thumbnail by Gourd
Houston, TX

Hey guys,

Those are 2 interesting mini-sky blue pictures with both looking different in nature. X`s flower is more cut into a star pattern where as Gourd`s looks to be more round in nature. Even the foliage in both pictures are distinc. It`s very exciting to see evidence of possible mutation of this cultivar.

I haven`t grown these yet but will this season and my picture is from the package. The seeds are commercially sold here for the first time that I know of and I agree that my picture looks different than both of yours, but we`ll have to wait and see what the seeds will bear. I`ll be watching this one for sure and report back.

East Aurora, NY(Zone 5a)

You're welcome MG! No, I haven't tried the mini sky blue MGs. Blue is my favorite color too! I am restraining myself from starting some of your seeds. I can't plant in the ground until the end of May! I think I will start some mid April and hope that they survive inside. I'm also worried about my kitten knocking them off of my window seat.
What is the deal with hydrogen peroxide? Is the HP & water mixture used for soaking the seeds?

Houston, TX

Thanks Gourd for sending us some goodies from USA. By boat it took exactly one month but we are very happy that it's here. I'll go and pick it up on monday.

PS. I will get and mail you some more Ten Ten seeds plus some rare ones that I have.

domo arigoto gozaimasu, (thanks)

Your so welcome.. the first package all I had to do is fill out a small green form, this time because of the weight, I had to use a bigger form and it seems like it took longer to get there. But, I'm happy it made it..
