Japanese Morning Glory Catalog Seeds

Houston, TX

We received the spring catalog for seeds available in Japan and there are a few new MG seeds being offered. I'm ordering two kinds. One is called 'Split Petals' and the other is called 'Tender Chocolate'. There are 20 seeds per order so I'll be able to share a few by mid March when I get them. They also have sunrise sarenade and pink flamingo so SP is a different flower.

This is catalog picture of split petals.

Gorgeous bloom. Reminds me of pink pom-poms

Looks like a very nicely balanced and proportioned feathered Ipomoea purpurea. That is really a nice clear pink as well. - Arlan

Houston, TX

Yes, it's a nice looking flower. I'll grow it and see how it compares to the other feathered type. I'll post again when they arrive making a few available.

Hey Jackie is the pink pom-poms a flower or are you refering to those things cheerleaders use?

WOW that one is a beauty! What does the 'Tender Chocolate' one look like?
Seems that catalog need to make it's way here! LOL ☺

Houston, TX

Hey Ronnie, here is the picture of 'Tender Chocolate' from the catalog. It looks reddish to me and the description says it's a large flower.

If you get seeds on the pink split petals when you grow them out, I would love to be on your list to receive a few. That one is gorgeous.
I've got some split white that I'm starting that I received from Japan. I hope they turn out looking like this, but in white.

The 'Chocolate' one looks like the 'Chocolate Silk' many of us have grown. It does look a little rosy to me too... Pretty

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Those pink pom pom shaped "hige" (for short) morning glories are my favorite. They are so easy to grow and yet they looked like I spent hours constantly tending in order to grow a plant that pretty in my garden. I`m simply thrilled to see the pink flamingo. I love it. :)

The tender chocolate is very pretty too. It is sort of a rosy color and very pretty.

MG Japan, It could be either or. Not quite as large as cheerleaders pom poms. lol
I think there might be flowers of the same name.....
Dahlia's or Mums perhaps.
Regardless, it's a beauty in pink.

Can we get a copy of the catalog? Does the vendor have a web site? I love that pompom - what a beauty. I'll get in line for some seeds. Let me know and I will find you something you might like. Thanks for sharing your pictures and knowledge with us!

Hey Guys, It's 6:55 am thursday and I'm just getting up. Thanks for the replies and both should be fun to grow.

Momcat I haven't seen the white split petal type and I'm willing to trade for some.

KayJones the company is Sakata and you may already know that they do not ship outside of Japan.

The first pink flower.....all I can say is YUMMY
The second one looks like the "Chocolate" I had last winter and during the summer as both have variegated leaves. Chocolate Silk hasent or shpuldnt have variegated leaves but with all the free pollinating going on it too shows up with the variegated leaves. Its VERY hard to show the brown colour in pics taken with digital camera, dont know why just that it is and even harder to transfere the colour to a print.
Janett

Here is my "Chocolate" from last year but its much more brown in real life

Hey Janett, nice picture and I can see that its true color is brownish. I'm going to upgrade my digital camera by the time things start growing here. My current digital camera is a 15 years old Ricoh and I bought it when they first came available. Only has 3.0 Pixel and works fine but I need to get an up to date one so I can retire this dinosaur.

sounds like we need to do a coop thing

Houston, TX

Hi Pamsue, are you volunteering to organize it?

Ooohhh!! A co-op would be great!!

Trading some would be great. I'll have to check and see how many seeds I have. I only received 6 to 8 of each of the varieties I got. I also have some described only as red bearded, white flower, and red bearded red flower. I have no idea what she meant by bearded. Some of the packs I received also mentioned that they were from Mr. Fuu. Is he someone important in JMG's? I lost the name and e-mail of the woman I got these from when my computer crashed last fall. I don't even recall where I initially found her!!

I would be interested in a co-op, too.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

A co-op would be marvelous.

Speaking of pom poms these flowers resemble the kind of pom pom I use for decorating and crafts. I can make them by winding the ribbons or yarn around a card. Then I tie in the middle, secure with a string, cut the ends with scissors, fluff them out and trim for shape. Check this web site to see exactly the kind of pom pom I`m refering to. I couldn`t help but smile when I saw this pretty vine getting covered with the little fluffy pink pom pom flowers. My flower was a darker pink and smaller and more compact than the Pink Flamingo. So perhaps the Pink Flamingo might resemble the larger pom poms used for decorating gifts while my darker pink flowers were more like the smaller craft pom poms.

I definitely would be in for a co-op!!

Houston, TX

OK I read over the current policy regarding Co-ops.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/583595/

These are the members that we currently are trading with and feel comfortable with to organize a Co-op with us..
Although we are new to Dave's, we somewhat know and trust them.
Atenkley, ByndeweedBeth, Emma, Gardener2005, Gourd, KayJones, Luvsgrtdanes

send a proposal and we will consider it.

PS-if your name is not listed that does not mean we do not want to trade with you. These are the members that we have come to know in the short time we 've been a member of this community.

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

I ran a Japanese MG seed co-op a year or two ago when Yuriko was still selling seeds. Wasn't too much work so I hope someone can get one going if MGJapan is willing to make the purchase(s) for us!

Houston, TX

Hi guys, after doing more reading about Co-ops I'm sorry to say that we're not interested in being part of one.
However we are open to trading for seeds and other items that's not available here.

hi..i want to participate in the coop!! sounds like a neat idea

pamsue

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

MGJ, keep me posted on the morning glory seeds. I have lots of other seeds to trade and will send things you can't get there.
How about a real Philly cheese steak! LOL
(I own a Pizza Shop!!)

Houston, TX

Ronnie stop it... Now you know you should not have mention that. I'm organizing a trip to USA Galveston this summer for a few friends to do some fishing, hunting and dog racing. I know they love pizza and me too. Maybe we'll check you out.

OK,I'll keep you posted on the new items when they are in.
