CLOSED: What bug does this on Live Oak?

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

I have these everywhere on my Live Oak tree. You can see a tiny hole where it looks like the larva may have left. Then on the other hand I may be in left field. I haven't a clue. Will this hurt the tree? What do I need to do?

Those look like gall to me. If they are (and someone who is really into all this will tell us) they don't do anything. They just sit there and then drop off. When your tree gets so big that you can't see all the branches you won't obsess so much over every little thing you see up there. Chill out! :>))

Thanks Ann I thought that gall grew like a strange growth on a tree. These hang like acorns. Actually maybe some bug encased the acorn as food for the larva. That makes sense.

It's probably from a gall wasp; it might hurt the particular twig it's on, but other than that it's not generally a problem

CEEJAYTOWN thanks for that link Thats it right down to what they look like inside. Thanks plantladyhou (love that name) and claypa, I guess I won't worry about my tree. If it were any other tree I wouldn't be as anxious but it takes a lifetime for these slow growers to look like a tree. I just wanted to have a heads up before my tree was in trouble.

Right now mine says It looks like you marked this thread as solved... if that is incorrect, click here to mark it as open. It is also after the last post.
