I have noticed that the majority of flowering cherry trees seem to be on grafted root stock. Will the trees not make it own root, or could it be that the only way to have a Yoshino flowering cherry tree is some kind of grafted hybrid? I know why they graft roses as some will not make it own root, or some kind of soil born diseases such as found in Florida. I would realy like to find Yoshino Cherry trees own root if they would make it here. I live in Chesapeake Va. zone eight, heavy clay that must be amended for just about everything in my yard. I think that cherry trees , roses ,and apples are in the same family. I also noticed that alot of apples seem to be grafted to. Thank you for any advice in advance.
yoshino cherry tree on own roots?
Cherries are very difficult to root from cuttings, so grafting is effectively the only (at least, the only commercially viable) way of propagating named cultivars.
