My first attempt

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm so proud of myself for FINALLY trying air layering. I have a Ficus Sylvie that I'd like to make fuller and thought this would be a fun way to do it! First, I wounded the the stem and dusted the cut with rooting horomone. Then, I wet some spaghum moss and wrapped a handful around the wound. I wrapped the spag with saran wrap and wrapped each end with twist ties. I have to check it every few days to see if the spag has dried. If so, I'll simply untie the top and pour a little bit of water in to rewet. It could take anywhere from 30-60 days(or longer) for roots to develop in the spagh. Wish me luck! I'll keep everyone posted on it's progress.

Good job! I did it once with a schefflera and it worked beautifully. I have no doubt yours will too.

Thank you all for the encouragement! I also put her under lights today, so I'm hoping that will speed the process along.

I am so anxious to do that......did it in college thousands of years ago!! If that is air layering then does someone know where to go on line for grafting? I want to put other colors of adenium on my mother plant....I have ordered the small ones in white, red, etc.....

Good Luck! I have always wanted to try that but have never gotten around to it. Keep us posted.

I have the same exact ficus ... it's rather small. I don't have the courage to try air layering it though! Not just yet anyway. You make it seem real easy though GH. Sure hope you keep us posted on the outcome .... maybe I will get brave! I will be watching for the progress on your Ficus!

Now I'm encouraged enough that I could try this on my Philo 'Pink Princess'. :) Ooooh, and I could try it on my Dieffenbachia 'Tropic Snow', too. I suddenly feel like a kid in a candy store. LOL

GrowHappy, you shouldn't be telling all of us that you have a Philodendron 'Pink Princess'.....Lin and I may find your house!!!! LOL

Uh-oh!(rolling eyes around in head) LOL

Happy, I don't think you have to do this with Pink Princess. I just cut a piece and stick it in water and it roots just fine.

Oh, Donna, I know. I've rooted pieces in soil before, but note that it has to be warm. I just want to try out the air layering to see if it will work on all my woody stemmed plants. Ya know how it is when you're on to something new!:))))
