What's going on with this tree? What are those growths/bumps all over it?

What's going on here?
Bacterial canker. An incurable disease; unsightly, and can make the branches break in gales/snow, as the cankers are less strong that the uninfected branch. That apart, it doesn't do a lot of harm to the tree.

Thanks for the response. It is unsightly, but the tree is back in the woods behind my house. It just kept catching my eye as it sways in the wind. I had to go out there and investigate. So mystery solved.

I have never seen anything like that...interesting to know what it is. sure is ugly.
