wierd yellow stuff

Northeast Harbor, ME

I have this unusual yellow growth on my hawthorne and maple. Does anyone know what this is?

Thanks.

Lichen. Completely harmless, it is only using the branches as a parking space, it doesn't take anything from the tree.

PS spellcheck: hawthorn (no -e :-)

No expert here, but I've been told by my county agent that lichen on a tree indicates that the tree is under stress, not from the lichen but from other issues. Don't mean to complicate the discussion.:))

Very dense lichen growth can indicate this, but does not always. The reason is that if the tree has a very thin, unhealthy crown, there is more light available for lichens to grow in. A dense, healthy crown can create such dense shade that lichens won't grow well. However, many trees naturally have a fairly open crown even when healthy, that allows through enough light for lichens. So the trees here may be OK.

Watersedge,

Strange looking stuff! I'd be tempted to cut into the big branch with a chainsaw right after it takes that sharp left-hand turn. Not that it would solve anything but it'd be interesting to see what's inside. Looks like the branch had been pruned once, a possible entry wound for wood-rotting fungi. Don't leave you car parked under it if there's an ice storm predicted.

Regards,
Ernie
