Non- botanical Latin

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Is there anyone out there who "speaks" Latin? I have a project for which I need a phrase translated from English to Latin ("Go Away, Grumpy Person Lives Here") and my one year in highschool left me about a week after it was over and I got my grades!

If anyone could help me, please send me an email.
thanks,
Kathleen

Sorry, I failed Latin and had the foresight not to try it again :)

Kathleen, here's a website that might be helpful: http://www.nd.edu/~archives/latgramm.htm

Another idea might be to contact your Catholic diocese and see if there is someone there who could help you translate.

Good luck!

Ha! This is fun. I only took part of my Latin class in HS. I remember this: "Est Britania parva insula? Non! Britania est magna insula!" (Is Britian a small island? No! Britian is a large island!)

Isn't that pathetic? Half a semester boils down into a useless phrase that's stuck in my mind like glue. LOL!! On that site Lilith suggested, how about this:

discedo privatus rudis incolo hac.

(Roughly, "Go away a private person rude inhabits here.")

Close as I could come - Thanks for the brain stretch today! ;o) Kimberley

Thanks for the help - Kimberley, I just might use that one. My s-i-l wants a sign for her door and I thought Latin, maybe with gargoyles...

Ok I've forgotten my endings so please feel free to correct my terrible grammar.

Abi! Dominus inconstans est

Depart/Be off with you! The master is changeable. Domina would be mistress....both meaning master or mistress of a house.

Pity I can't think of anything which correlates to grumpy in latin.

WHat a great thread! Makes me wanna make a sign like that and put it at the end of the driveway next to my "visitors by appointment only" sign! I also fit the grumpy description!

Hehehe, after the first one is done, maybe I'll go into business!! Want to be on the waiting list?

I can't resist a Latin translation! ARRGGHHH It must be doing me good but my brain hurts LOL

OK closest I can get to Visitors by appoinment only is:

Ad visitare solus apud tempora licet

To be visited only at the time it is permitted.

Naw too awkward LOL anybody do any better?

Horseshoe, this may work. "tresspassers will be used for medical experiments".

LOL good one Mary!

I could give it to you in five contemporary languages. How about one of those public signs with the same phrase in umpteen languages? ... topped with an international symbol -- something in a red circle with a diagonal slash -- how about a round mirror with a red slash, i.e. "YOU are not permitted."

I think I fit in the grumpy category also: My "welcome" mat says "GO AWAY."
