Van Gogh’s Starry Night Swap

This swap is for flowers of the colors used in Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting. It’s one of my favorites.

If you are not familiar with Van Gogh’s art, and would like to see more, click on this link and type in vincent van gogh paintings

http://images.google.com/

His paintings ranged from still life, the most famous being the Sunflower series, peasants and landscapes. He was a troubled soul and like most great masters, not truly appreciated until his death. Don McLean’s song, Vincent (Starry Night) has stunning lyrics that describe his paintings as well as Van Gogh’s tortured soul. You can go here to read the lyrics:

Moving right along ….

I have captured the 6 primary colors Vincent used in his Starry Night painting. There will be 12 participants, 2 for each color. I realize that matching the colors exactly will not be easy, so try and get as close as you can. Each participant will send 6 packets of seeds (can be bought or home grown) of the color they chose. Please make sure your screen name is on each packet of seeds and you may decorate them if you wish. Do not send seeds until the swap is closed. Each participant must send a bubble envelope with return postage and labels enclosed along with a note with your screen name and the name of the swap. Also put your screen name and name of the swap on the outside of the envelope.

Here's a comprehensive search engine to van Gogh's life and works: http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/van_gogh_vincent.html

The Athenaeum has especially great scans - including many of his flower paintings both as still life and in context of a garden - but also covering a wider gamut of his work.

The Artcyclopedia website is the only free access to complete articles in Encyclopedia Brittanica on van Gogh and many other artists.

A great scan of van Gogh's Starry Night is at http://www.rasiel.com/wp/vangogh1.html . It's been cropped, but its clarity is awesome - wonderful wallpaper (sorry, van Gogh about the nuances of that term).

X, remember the 4 groups of 6 packets each of seed for the color blue I sent to be shared with the other members of the Rainbow Swap that you didn't distribute? If you haven't sent them back to me yet, could you apply them to this swap for both slots of blue? If they're already in the mail, I'll send them all back & you can put them to this swap for blue and keep the rest for yourself as a gift. Let me know if this is acceptable.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I can take number 2.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I sent mine already. I wasn't supposed to was I? I got a little confused and sent 8 packs. Use them to fill in if you need to.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Darn! I was going to try to stay away from this, but I can't! LOL!

I have #4 A perfect match if I'm not mistaken.

Wheeee!

It's closed now. Each participant must send a bubble envelope with return postage and labels enclosed along with a note with your screen name and the name of the swap. Also put your screen name and name of the swap on the outside of the envelope.

Also please have your screen name on the packets of seeds as well as the number of the color you are providing so everyone can know who sent what!

You may send your packs of seeds now. If you don't know my address, I'm in the address exchange.

Ok! Mine are all ready to go and will be in the mail tomorrow. I wrote my name and such on the back of my BE right under the flap! Thanks X.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

This is my first swap - for postage, should I include 2 first class stamps? The bubble envelope is approx. 5 in. x 8 in., right?

I should send a total of 6 seeds, right? (kidding, I'm kidding)

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Send the same amount of postage that it cost you to send it.

Xeramtheum

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

wrightie,

2 stamps is sort of a waste of money. Postage increments are this:

52c ---> a 39c + 24c butterfly stamp
63c ----> a 63c stamp
87c ----> Not sure about a single stamp or this one. I have 84c stamps for overseas and add a 2c and a 1c when I mail bubble envies.

There is no 78c, it's just 15c too much.

To mail 6 packs it is probably 52c, but it's on the cusp of being 63c, so you need to weigh it or just stick 63c on. It depends on the weight of the seeds and whether they are in paper envelopes or plastic.

I'm having a funny problem....I have to send dollars rather than stamps - from Ireland
No one in the village has got small dollar bills!
Been to every bank in Westport (small village)....will go to banks in Castlebar today (slightly larger village!)
I love this "living in the country" lark!
Sue

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hey, Sue! My grandmother was born near Westport and later moved to Castelbar in Co Mayo! She emigrated in 1901, at age 16, to Chicago. Last name was Corley, pronounced Curley. Since all of her sisters emigrated, too, all at different times as they scraped up the passage fare, there wouldn't be any cousins still around, but I thought I'd mention the connection.

If you run into any probems in Westport, I'll be happy to send X the postage for you, no problem.

Suzy

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Illoquin, that is Great information, thanks.

I'll pick up a selection of different stamps when I post my package today... because I've obviously fallen down some sort of Dave's Garden Rabbit Hole and will probably be doing these swaps for the rest of my life.

Ballintleva, Ireland

Illoquin
We get so many people with Irish connections - but this is the first time I've had such a near connection!
Do you know the area/village they were from?
There are a number of Corleys here now...D-Mail me your Grandmothers first name - and her sisters and I am see if I can find them on the census
Our website may be of interest to you, as it shows the cottage and area we live in etc - www.ballintleva.com

Sue, don't worry about return postage. I'll take care of that .. just glad to have you aboard!

Xeramtheum

ps, you could add some Smarties! lol

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Sue!!! What a wonderful place you have. I just spent the last half hour on your website! You did a terrific job. The before and after picture of your cottage is stunning! That certainly took a lot of work. Check out my trade list and see if there is anything you might be interested in.

Mine is in the mail too!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm ready to send, too -- we don't have to add a little present or decorate these darn packs, do we? Because I can't draw or paint like Vincent! ROTFL!

Suzy

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Mine is ready to go and will get dropped in the mailbox this afternoon.

Coaling, AL(Zone 7b)

I'll have mine ready to put in the mail tomorrow morning. Elizabeth

Ballintleva, Ireland

All ready to be packed....I managed to get a $5 bill from the "big town" Castlebar today !

Xeramtheum
Thanks for the compliments...cottage is habitable (just installing a power shower today...the height of luxury!) - but as you can see lots of work to be done making the land into a "garden"

Tell me...whats with the "smarties"...can't you get them? (If so - its a crime!)

Sue

PS - going to look at your list now.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol .. no you cant get them here. I lived in Rickmansworth for a few years .. got addicted to Smarties, Black Magic, Orange Squash and Porridge Oats (the oats we have here are pretty pathetic). Our chocolate is different.

X

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

X,

I can hook you up with Smarties and other British must-haves if you need supplies. We've got British Import stores near me plus my husband is English, so the in-laws send care packages over from time to time.

Do you have Safeway grocery stores in SC? The larger (and nicer) ones have started carrying PG Tips tea, Heinz products, as well as chocolates, lucozade, marmalades, shepherd's pie sachets, etc. etc.. I think Tesco's and Safeway are owned by same corp.(?) hence the availability.
