Transplanting seedlings

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi,
I used some of the rubbermaid tubs 18x8x5 or something like that to get the seeds going. I am trying to decide if I should leave them in the tub for another 3 months or transplant them now to 3" pots, they are about 4 months old. My reasoning is that in 3 months the roots will be even bigger than they are now and trying to move all those roots without dirt around them will be difficult. If I move them now, although the roots are long they will recover and I can just plant the 3" plug later on, keeping the dirt around the roots. I guess I don't really know how quickly seedling bulbs recover from transplanting...

Help please,
Andrew

I would say dont transplant them. When you put them in the ground, tip out the entire container and plant the entire container WITHOUT DIVIDING.

That is what I would do.
and do do every year,.

I transplanted my 3 month old seedlings, very hesitantly 2 or 3 weeks ago. They were doing well, but perhaps I planted too many in the baggies as things were a bit overcrowded and I felt like the leaves were getting. Those little buggers surived the delicate transplanting into 6 inch deep plastic pots, with a dome over the top to keep in the moisture. I'm sure others have trumped me on experience, but again, I felt like I might lose what I had (maybe not) if I didn't move them. So far so good. Lily seed growing has been so much fun this winter.

I'm not that great at these closeups, but here's a couple more of how the transplanted growth looks now.

Oh, Pard, did you notice these are your babies? They are looking great.

Lookin' good magnolia. I think you should prop the dome a bit for ventilation though. Maybe skew it sideways a little or prop one end up with a stick. How does that sound? I'm thinking it might be a little too humid in there...

It's right next to a space heater, so I think that's what causes the humidification, the temp differences. The ones closest to the space heater have the best growth. Then there's the cats.....I'll give it a try and see what can be done here. I can't wait to put them outside, but it'll be a while yet. Thanks for your help.
