Look What I Found

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

While the pic isn't very good, it's clear enough for you to see these pkt's.
2 purchased at Wal-Mart and 1 from Lowe's.
Bright-Eyed Girl looks like Crimson Rambler or Scarlet Ohara not? A senior
moment for me when I can't tell the difference.
Burpee's Heavenly White, the yellow throat is not visible on the actual seed pkt
but is on the pic, so Pearly Gates?
Blossom Star has Milky Way and a pale pink with darker rays. If I'm not mistaken,
I had something very similiar to this one when my Tall Mxd finished flowering.
They were tiny (end of season blooms) very pale and had the darker pink bands.
2 of the 3 pkts are not on Burpee's website

Jackie,
Yes - 'Bright-Eye'd Girl', is Crimson Rambler.
Scarlett O'Hara does not have the *Star* in its Blooms.
Burpee is just pumping up their selling by giving their seeds 'new names'.
Just what we need - MORE CONFUSION!
Thompson and Morgan is just as bad too.

I have a few others from Burpee that you aren't showing as well that they have 're-named' and will take photos as soon as I can and post them here. One pack is called 'Old Glory Mix'.

Thanx Emma. Yes I saw the Old Glory Mix when I purchased these pkt's.

I purchased a pack of Burpees,MG seeds at Walmart. The photo on the seed pack has the blooms of the sunrise MG mix.The name on this pack is now called Burpees Best Mix.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

You are so right skimper. I got a pack of those also.
However, the seeds look like I. purpurea to me.

Emma

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

When I go back to Wal-Mart, I'm going to buy Old Glory Mix.
Lowes also had a pkt with what looked like Milky Way and a darker rayed version
of the same. I think it might have had a purple with rays, maybe Star of Yelta or
G'pa Otts in this same pkt.

This was my glory out of the Sunrise Mxd this past summer.

That so burns me about seed companies advertising or packaging 'Scarlett O'Hara'--they NEVER have the correct flower on the front (totally magenta red flower, including the throat). If they do have the correct photo, your seeds NEVER grow out that way.

Greenwich, OH

Emma Your right! The seeds enclosed in the Burpees best mix ,is different than the original sunrise mix. They do look like the I.Purpurea to me not the I.imperialis seeds that was offered in the original sunrise mix. Good! thing I have original seeds reserved back from the original sunrise mix.
I have a link saved awhile back in my favorite places,I found on the internet with Burpees old sunrise mix.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

I'm pretty sure I have an older pkt of Sunrise Mixed and a newer pkt.. Don;t know which one
my fuchsia bloom came out of.
Stacey, I think Parks seeds shows an all red flower in their pic of SOH. Wonder if their seed might
be the real deal?

Jackie

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

If you get get the real deal, I'll be surprised. I got a packet from another company with all red on the front, and not the first one grew out that way. All had the white throat. :-(

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Here's a pack of SOH I picked up today at Wallmart from Burpees seeds. Pic shows all red. I hope so!!

Ronnie, will be interesting to see what you end up with.

The SOH stock that I have given out has all red throats...so to those who received any of the limited SOH that I gave out...it's the "Real Thing"...so,expect to see solid throats this coming season...

Ron

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

I did grow SOH seeds purchased from Parks year before last.
Very Pretty Blooms, but NOT the real deal.....
Bright White Throats!

NO seed company has the 'Real' Red like Ronnie is showing.
and NO ONE on eBay is selling the 'Real' Red.
Doesn't this just make you want to go right through your computer when they post or print the Solid Red Blooms, and.....

Only Ron has the 'secret' REAL Red Scarlett O'Hara WITH RED THROATS, and I can't wait to grow mine.

Emma

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Emma, is there a chance that any resulting seed you gather from the true SOH might
end up with a white throat? Curious since that's all that we find from the usual
seed conpanies.

I just saw this post and here is what came out of this package two years ago. Really surprised me too.

Gourd, all the seeds produced white flowers or just that one seed?

Jackie

Mesilla Park, NM

Well, after that one, I never did plant anymore of the seeds.. I had two packs and still have quite a few seeds left. Didn't try these this year, but have started some from Ron. I am hoping to get them to bloom, as i type, there are two Doves in front of my window necking..lol. They loook so cute.. I just had to put that in here. Maybe they are just preening each other.

here is one more photo

Ronnie :I picked up a pack of scarlett o hara at walmart also.I hope they are the true red scarlettO haras.I have grown these before and never have had a true red scarlett o hara.Lets keep our fingers crossed. Karla

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Karla I'm going to start some now, hopefully in a few months I will see a flower. I am doubtful now after all I read though. o:(

Jackie,
The SOH seeds from Ron will produce the REAL SOLID RED,
so I will have to say 'yes' the seeds should continue to remain True,
HOWEVER...
He did tell me NOT to grow any other SOH near it.
So, we shall wait to see how gorgeous they are.

Antoinette, that is a VERY interesting White Bloom.
Did your seeds look like I. nil, or what?
Looks they are the plant with the Heart-Shaped Blooms?
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS WHITE BLOOM.
And, do not see any yellow in the throat, so can't be I. tricolor.

I'm glad you are growing them again.
I wanna be on the 'want list'....

I still say not to give up growing any SOH seeds that you can find.
Ron tells me [and not talking about his REAL SOH]
that 'some day' 'some one' will get the Real Thing from one of those seeds.

If anyone ever does, I would yank out any other SOH vines near it that have a white throat
and guard the Solid night and day *-*

Emma

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Emma, I was just curious since it's so hard to find the original.
Gourd, your white glory is gorgeous. I had one like this, came out of my choice mixed.

There is a possibilty that someone may get a SOH with an all red throat, but unless the solid red throat is carefully protected from being pollinated with pollen from another Ipomoea nil of any(!) type...you'll wind up losing it...

If any of the SOH that I sent out produces anything less than completely solid throats...those plants must be culled immediately...

The SOH with the completely solid throats should be hand pollinated otherwise you risk losing the solid throat...

Have you noticed that the photos on e-bay and elsewhere show either

1a) blooms with something other than solid throats

1b) photos taken from an angle that doesn't allow you to actually see if the tube is solid or not...

or

2) the same couple of old photos from commercial catalogs that have been used for too many years

If anyone had SOH with solid throats >Where are the updated photos clearly showing the "Real Thing"...

The SOH that I've shared produces blooms that are red down to the very bottom of the tube and if the flower is cut in half >you can clearly see that the entire tube is pigmented and the only white visible is from the pistil and the stamens...

The other question that always arises is what is 'truly red'...and each person may draw their own line as to what is 'truly red' or not...

The stock of SOH that I have usually produces blooms that match the color of the flower shown here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/pdb_Floridian_2002-11-11_1037060142477.jpg
actually more of a crimson than scarlett, but I think they're red...

TTY,...

Ron
