euonymus europaea red cascade, anyone familiar with this shrub?
It caught my eye in a book, and I read the flowers have a fouls smell... The berries; attractive to birds?
And now the best question, will it grow in 9b?
(and maybe; where to get it?)

Thank you, Christie

Christie,

In response to your last question, I'd answer- Not very long. I don't have any experience with the plant but it's rated on the warm end for zone 7. What I'm not sure about is if it'd cool off long enough there to satisy it's requirements. Hopefully someone with more experience can help you out further.

It will grow well in northern California, perhaps too well, there's a high risk it may become invasive. I'd recommend trying the California native Euonymus occidentalis instead, the two are closely related and similar in appearance. It should also be easier to find, at nurseries specialising in CA native plants.

Resin, I did research, and it is only invasive on the East-Coast and some states close there.
Not overhere,
Christie

Does it need cross pollination with another species to set fruit? Resin?

Thank you

I'd be extremely cautious about that - your climate is very similar to the climate here in western Europe where Euonymus europaeus is native. Any lack of invasion in the area may simply be because not many people have planted specimens in the area.

Euonymus occidentalis also looks just as good anyway :-)

Resin, I just spoke to Lucile ( from Whitman farms) She grows them one state up from me, and says they are not invasive here. She has had them for over 25 years, and the European one isn't invasive.

I have one of these. The lipstick pink seed pods with their bright orange seeds are truely amazing. The birds haven't touched mine and i didn't notice any foul smell. It will be a talking point in your garden.
