replanting nandina

Daphne, AL

I was given a large Nandina plant today and I just replanted it in a large pot. The only problem is the plant was riped straight out of the ground so I have my doubts as to if it will live. For the next couple of weeks should I keep it in the shade,part-sun, or full sull, and also how wet should I keep the soil. I feel like it will live IF I treat it correctly over the next few weeks. I planted it in half miracle grow potting soil, half cheap potting soil(wal-mart), mixed togther of course.

Water thoroughly and keep it in part-shade until it puts out new growth. Don't water again until the soil feels dry to the touch, or stick your finger in the soil and water when it's dry past the first knuckle. Very scientific, LOL. The reason for that is, you want the plant not to stress too much, only slight drought pressure, so that it puts out new roots. This is sometimes a colored shrub, and you may lose some of the color in shade, but it should color up if you put it in a sunnier spot after it recovers from transplant shock. Hope this helps.

i think it would be good to trim it by about half. i do that when i am in your situation and it seems to help them recover faster.

when you say trim, do you mean the foliage, or the stalks. This plant has 7 stalks about 5-7feet tall. What root mass I did get fit snugly in a 20 gallon pot

You can trim the stalks to the ground and they will come back fuller and lusher.....

if it were me i would just make the whole plant about 3' tall. what levilyla said was right, nandina don't mind drastic pruning, but since it just had such a shock, i think i would leave some on top. otherwise it might exhaust itself trying to do top and bottom at once.

Here in my part of Florida, nandina is seemingly unkillable. It seems a remarkably tough plant (also an invasive weed with seeds spread by birds). The suggestions given above can't hurt, though -- good luck!

Mark., sorry, in a bad mood and couldn't resist
