Awsome lily pictures, Peter and Mary-Ann
Welcome to Daves and the lily addiction center.
Haven't ever saw a lily I didn't drool over and thought I couldn't live without!! LOL
Maxine
HELLO DIANN thank you for the lovely complement, we totally rebuilt the cottage here with an acre of rush moorland, this is what we have done in nearly the last ten years, we are now making a tropical garden, which we have been told that we cannot do, but there again, we were told that this garden could not exist here, but here it is, it just makes us more determined to do it, you can do anything, if you put your heart and mind into it.
Here is a collage of just some of our work, we have done everything our self, that is my daughter and I and are very proud of what we have achieved, we call it our dream garden and we are absolutely crazy on lilies, but I'm also crazy on all other plants to, anything that grows, we are also growing a huge collection of brugmansia, we open the garden for charities to raise funds, hope to hear from you again soon, thank you for the encouragement, this is a link to a web page with a lot more pictures of our garden and it shows you where we live, hope that you enjoy the tour.
Hope that you are keeping well, kindest regards from Peter and Mary-Anne on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change what I can, and the wisdom to know the difference
Hi Andrew and Maxine, its really nice to meet other lily enthusiasts as they are one of the most beautiful flowers, and the perfume is beautiful, i have been growing lilies for around 20 years now, and gardening for at least 40 years, i am what you might call a gardening widow, LOL. I am lucky to have my daughter that is probably worse than I am, when it comes to gardening, she is an inspiration, and helps me keep my spirits up.
Andrew i by around 100 Lillie's every year then i have the ones that i cross bread as well, i think that you can tell that we live for gardening, 24/7 thing with us, we are now building a tropical garden, as our shelter belt is starting to come into its own, we have grown hundreds of trees and shrubs our self, to protect our tender plants, it is an acre garden, we actually look down on the mountains from our house on the Island, we have a beautiful loch or as you would call it a lake on the back part of the property, and we look over the moorland, some of the problems that we have had to over come, is the wind and the constant rain that we have, we have had to put loads of drainage in the property, the lilies love the moister in the peat land up here, they seem to thrive on it. We never take the lilies out of the ground, they are left in over winter, even in all of the rain we get, which is said to be one of the rainiest places that there is
You all take care of yourselves, greatest respects, and thank you for your encouragement, regards from Peter and Mary-Anne
I love the feeling that your photographs bring. If you didn't say where you were from, I would still know it was Europe, somewhere. The buildings, the scene, all very old world and lovely. You must have a great sense of joy when you look out your windows; what a picturesque scene you've created. I'd love to take a tour. Thank you so much for sharing this with us and welcome to the lily forum.
You have created your own bit of heaven! I'm going straight to your web page and look around.. Oh so beautiful!
Diann
PS. I just showed my husband your wonderful pictures and I said to him "See you could help me do that!" and he said "What? Move to Scotland?" What can I say, he's an Iowan. :)

Oh! My husband is a wannabe Scot! I absolutely adore your pics...when we go to visit Scotland I hope to be in your area!
Michelle
Welcome Peter and Mary-Anne! Your garden pics are a breath of fresh air, especially in this dreary winter. Thank you so much for sharing :)
You have absolutely stunning gardens, and the scenery around you is breathtaking. Thank you so very much for showing your gardens to all of us. I really enjoyed the web page photos also.
Peter, a question?
Do you scale all your new lily purchases and start lilies from seed?
How many bulbs do you have in your totat? Any problem keeping any, like orientals?
Thanks for answering all of my questions?
Peter - more questions, please:
Do you buy plants locally or order them?
Does all your wood for your fabulous structures come from the mainland by ferry or is it all purchased locally.
Oh, I so envy you! It has been a long time dream of mine to visit Scotland. I keep trying to get my husband to transfer there so that we could live there for a few years. Maybe one day :) Your lilies are so beautiful!
Steph
Hi,
New to DG kinda, and just wanted to ask a stupid question, are these day lilly's? or diffrent ones? Sorry like I said I am new and I just ordered several day lilly's and was wondering if these are the same?
All of your pictures are beautiful...
Susan
Hi Susan, these are true lilies from the lilium family. Daylilies are from the hemerocallis family. It can all be pretty confusing. They are really different and if you would like to know all the differences I would be happy to go into more detail. Also, no question is a stupid question, gardening forums are really awesome because it's like a huge book that talks back to you :)
Steph
Susan,
Definitely make room for both in your garden!
Well, I don't really want to confuse anyone more, but the logical, picky part of me says I must:
When Lilygrower talks about "family", technically she means genus. In most people's minds it's the same thing: a group of closely related plants. But a genus is a more refined grouping, a family more broad.
Now, why this is important:
Daylilies are the Hemorocallis genus.
True lilies are the Lilium genus.
Never the twain shall meet.
However, both are members of the Lily Family (Lilaceae).
Please excuse my compulsive need for taxonomic lucidity.
Lefty, it's always best to be correct about something. Thanks. :)
Your lilies are stunning! thank you for sharing your garden with us.
