Cabrillo Annual Sale

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Does anyone regularly go to the Cabrillo Sale? I haven't before, but think I'm going to have to do it this year to satisfy my salvia cravings. Their list of what they offered last year was very, very tempting and contains varieties that I haven't come across elsewhere. Am I correct in assuming it is really, really crowded? Is it feasible or possible to get their early for good parking? And,especially, is there enough offered of different varieties to come out with a load or would one be lucky to get just a few of what you want? I would take a trailer (seriously) if I can get enough of what I'm looking for. I usually don't like the big event sales...'cause I get that greedy, greedy, fabulous estate sale kind of feeling, but I've kinda gotten all there is to offer in the familiar places down here. Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks,
Sherry

Hi Sherry,

Where is Cabrillo? When is this sale?
Can't help you with your inquiry, as I've never been to it, but would be interested.

Cabrillo is in Aptos (near Santa Cruz) and the sale is May 12/13 (Mothers Day weekend if that makes a difference). I've never been, but after seeing their list of Salvia's I was thinking of going this year, plus I now live a half hour farther south than I used to so now it's just a bit over an hour drive instead of almost 2 hours like it was before. I have to look at my garden sale calendar first though and make sure it doesn't conflict with any of my other "must go" plant sales.

As far as what to expect in terms of crowds/parking I really don't know--but you could probably call them and ask if nobody here has experience to share. On their website, it sounds like they have a couple parking lots where you can park and a shuttle from there to the sale, so my guess is they plan for plenty of parking, but there are also probably a lot of people that go, otherwise they wouldn't plan shuttles, etc. Hopefully someone who's been to these before will chime in!

I'm thinking it might be worth the $25 as a member just to be able to go on Friday for the members' pre-sale....h mmmmm?

Oh no, I didn't realize it was that far away. :-( It is also too late for me to attend for the reason I wanted to go.
Thanks for the info though.

I already have too many other memberships to justify another one, plus by the time I get off work and fight my way through rush hour in San Jose/Silicon Valley, the sale would be over for the night! So if I go it'll have to be Sat or Sun.

I lived in Aptos for a number of years, and can highly recommend this plant sale - the folks in the horticulture dept. at Cabrillo College go all out with splendid variety and number of plants offered, so even on Sunday there are good plants to be found. The sale is held in the athletic field, so it's marvelously spread out for wandering and looking at everything; and that is right next to a huge parking lot (it's a commuter campus), so there is *plenty* of parking.
Aptos is next to Santa Cruz - you head "over the hill" on 17 and take Hwy 1 as towards Watsonville (not Half Moon Bay), and take the Park Road exit (immediately after New Brighton State Beach exit) and go towards the mountain side, and take that first right around the frontage, or head up and turn right on Soquel Avenue; from there signs and the parking area will be readily visible.

They've posted the list of what's going to be available...time to see if it's worth the trip or not!

ecrane,
Thanks, I wouldn't have known.....where did you find the 2007 list? All I find is the 2006 list.

There's a link to it from the horticulture dept main page...here it is: http://www.cabrillo.edu/academics/horticulture/plantinventory.html
