Need Help with Moist Shade

Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Hi everyone. I posted this question in the Shady Gardens forum, and they suggested I ask here, too. I have an area along the foundation of my house that is in deep shade. The ground is also moist, as there is a gentle slope towards the house in that area. It's not constantly wet, but tends to hold water after a rain, etc. I'd love to plant an evergreen shrub or an evergreen hedgerow there, but I'm not sure if there are any evergreens that would tolerate moist shade. I planted two rhododendrons there last year and both of them developed wilt and died. Any suggestions?? Would andromeda do well there?

Thanks so much.

Consider doing some work to change the grade. It's never good to have water flow towards the house. Can lead to lots of problems. After that you can consider plant material.

Andromeda meaning Pieris, no. Demands drainage. Real Andromeda likes boggy, acid sites, but is very low-growing. Would sweetbay magnolia be too big? Otherwise, inkberry, Ilex glabra should work.

I'm with Victor, you really don't want the ground sloping toward the house and collecting moisture near the foundation. You can end up with much bigger problems than dead plants!
