will photinia grow near a black walnut?

Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I would like to transplant some photinia bushes near a very old black walnut tree. We have seven black walnuts, so it's a challenge to avoid them.

I have checked some of the websites about what will and won't grow under black walnuts, but I haven't seen photinia listed either way. Has anyone had any experience with this combination?

Also, I put in a hydrangea just beyond the drip line of a black walnut. It looked fine last summer, its' first in that location. A tree specialist seemed to think it will be fine if not directly under the drip line - any thoughts?

You'll find some plants will appear to be okay for a year or two, even three, and then they just die. That's been my experience. And that's some tree expert you've got there - everything I've found about juglone issues says the zone is up to 80 feet from the trunk of the tree. It's certainly well past the dripline.

The lists are not always accurate either. I think it's a shame no one seems to be doing much in the way of research on what plants will or won't survive.

Thank you, both. I will move the hydrangea further away. Finding a spot that isn't near a black walnut is tricky, though! Our highbush blueberries and raspberries are also too close, I imagine. Can't explain why else they didn't do very well last summer.
