Hi.. Looking for Salvia seeds...

Rehovot, Israel

Hi to all,
i would like to purchase or trade for seeds of:
Salvia longispicata
Salvia caespitosa
Salvia bulleyana

if any of you can help in this regard, it would be greatly appreciated...
Tom:)

Hi Tom, I don't want you to think people are ignoring you, the salvia's you mention are not common ones here, I don't recall ever seeing any of them at the local nurseries so my guess is not too many people (if any) are growing them. You might try checking B&T World Seeds, they have seeds for all sorts of less common plants.

Rehovot, Israel

Thanks ecrane3... i have tried B&T to no avail... guess i will keep on looking.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

B&T usually has everything, if they don't have them then I think it's a long shot to find them somewhere else but good luck! The other thing you might try is I'm sure there's a Salvia society of some sort, they might be able to provide some assistance.

Tom,
The Cabrillo Plant Sale is coming up in May and they have an extensive collection of salvia. I checked their list of what they had available last year but no luck with the 3 you're looking for. They must indeded be quite elusive. I'l have to look them up and see why.

Oh wow!! Now I want the bulleyana!! That's beautiful. Looking it up, Thompson & Morgan was the first site to come up....do they not have the seed? Longispicata is Blue Chiquita and I had that on my list to pick up from the place where I get some of my salvia. Since I didn't get it when I last picked up a load, I'm thinking that they had it on their available list as having one but that I didn't find it. Will check again. I really want that bulleyana!
Sherry
edited to add that my salvia place did list (one) Blue Chiquita and listed it as longispicata, but then further listed longispicata as being possible parent, so.....? In any case, I've found that sometimes when they supposedly have (one), that one is unfindable there. I'm planning on going to the Cabrillo sale in May, so I'll be on the lookout for any of the 3.

I've seen Blue Chiquita and a couple others listed as a hybrid between longispicata and some other salvia, maybe farinaceae (probably spelled that one wrong)

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

try this link, http://ugatrial.hort.uga.edu/index.cfm?fuseaction=plants.plantDetail&plant_id=1367 , it also recommends source for the plant/sed??? i do not know as i have not tried the google the source recommended.. click arrow left or right to see other salvia species.

here's another source http://www.nhg.com/db/23265.htm , u probably need to write these people to find out if u can buy seeds from them. i see u are out of the country.

good luck!

Mystic Spires and Blue Chiquita we seem to be able to locate...it's that parent longispicata that is so elusive. The neat thing about salvias is that there are more and more everyday what with their promiscuity and all. It does make it awfull hard to resist so many different ones, though.

Thank you all so so much.....
It is so incredible that help that you are providing me:)
The cross between Salvia longispicata x farinacea is what produces these hybrids such as 'Mystic Spires' and 'Indigo Spires'... these hybrids are sterile.
Therefore i would like the actual parents for myself and try make hybrids of my own:)
If anyone can help ... i would appreciate it.
Is Blue Chiquita a synonym of S. longispicata? or a hybrid as well.
Tom.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

I believe Blue Chiquita is a hybrid.

Sherry,

I looked up that Cabrillo plant sale - wow, lucky you! You'll be like the proverbial kid in a candy store. I take it you've been before and it's worth the trip? Have fun.

Kathleen, No, I haven't been before. I'm trying to find out who has...drdon has advised that the fall sale may possibly have more in the way of specialized salvias...which makes sense, having the spring and summer to do lots of propagating. I don't really look forward to going, but I don't think any of the other sales will have such a selection of salvias. I do want it to be worth the trip...we'll see.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Do they have a fall sale? I thought theirs was just once a year. Could be wrong though!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Ecrane, It was news to me also, but then I'd not known of the spring one until this last year. Will have to do some checking.
Sherry

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Ecrane, checking back, I see that drdon recommended the Strybing spring sale for salvia and that it pays to be a member for early shopping. Are you a member at Stryb?
Sherry

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

No I'm not--I live closer to UC Berkeley so I'm a member of their botanical garden instead (can't afford to join all of them!) I have only been to the Strybing sale one year (during the open to the public hours), and I was on a Melastomataceae kick at the time so I don't remember even looking at the salvias. But they always have salvias at their monthly sales and I'm sure they've got a good collection. I think they usually publish a list of plants on their website before the sale so you can look at that and decide if it's worth coming up for it or not. I know there are a lot of Bay Area people here who have been to their sales before and I'm sure some of them are members, hopefully they'll see this and chime in, if not then I'm sure if you start a new thread to ask about it I'm sure you'll get tons of responses. I know there are lots of DG'ers out there who've been to this one before!

Hi Tom, Dave just gave us a new forum for Agastaches and Salvias, you could try posting there and see if anyone has the seeds you're looking for. I'm not sure if you'll have any luck or not--I've actually been hunting for new sources for salvias lately and have not run across any of the ones you're interested in anywhere so I do think that they're relatively rare, but this is where the salvia lovers are going to be hanging out so maybe someone will have some leads for you

Thanks ecrane3... i am actually speaking on behalf of someone else, i never knew there were so many people interested in this plant:)

The 2007 NARGS seed list did not show S. longispicata though your other two were shown. This years list of Salvias has 45 entries out of more than 4,500 total. Good luck in your search.

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

balvenie is THE MAN!

If you want to get something on your list. Act now and go to NARGS.

We all have our holy grails. At this time mine is S. dombeyi......but it could change once I have it.....lol.

good luck tom,
don

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Don--if you don't mind a bit of a drive, S. dombeyi is on the list for Cabrillo College plant sale over Mother's Day weekend. I may be going, so if you're not up for the drive I'll let you know if I go and if there are any left when I get there I'd be happy to pick one up for you (I'm not a member though, and since it's about a 2 hr drive to get there, the public sale will have been open for a couple hours already by the time I arrive, so if it's popular or in short supply I may miss them).
