Sorry all, I know I haven't been visiting the bird forum too much lately. I'm sure you all heard my DH passed away two weeks ago, since then I've been trying to keep busy. I finally got out the other day to get some bird pics...then the batteries went dead in my golf cart....not good, they are shot. Batteries cost around $450 ..so it looks like I will be walking the park for awhile. I did get a picture of a sapsucker, but that was all. The great horned owls have mated and looks like they may be nesting in the same tree as previous years. Does anyone know how long after they mate, they lay the eggs ?
Sapsucker & owl question
betterbloom - I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. {{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}} And I'm sorry to hear about your golf cart battery. I can't believe the batteries are THAT expensive. :-(
I don't know anything about the owls. Actually, I know very little about any birds, but I just wanted to tell you that I'm glad you are back on the Bird Watching forum! I am sure someone can give you that info. But if not, try this website:

Thanks Becky, I'm trying to get back to a normal routine...what ever that may be? And yes a golf cart takes 6 batteries, the cheapest I have found is $70 each, and I will have to drive about 100 miles to get them. Like I said, I'm walking for awhile. I'm going now to check out that website. I'm really excited about the owls because this year I have a digital camera to take the pictures. The tree that they nest in is about 200 feet from me so I will be able to get lots of pics.
I'm glad you are getting out and trying to continue with some of your routines after losing your dh. I can't imagine such a loss. I know it must be very hard to do that. The first year is the hardest. I hope you have a good support group of family and friends.
That's really cool about the Owl nest close by! Can't wait to see photos when they do have babies!
Gosh, so sorry to hear a golf cart takes 6 batteries. I didn't know that. That's crazy!!! :-( :-(
26- 35 days incubation.
Betterbloom, I'm so sorry for your loss. (((Hugs))). Glad your trying to stay busy.

Betterbloom, I'm so glad to see you on this forum - and I admire your wisdom and strength.
I may have missed it, but can't find how many days from the time they mate until the Mother owl lays the eggs. I'll have to do more research when my brain is working better.
I am quite lucky. I have all of DG to talk to and about 200 people in the park at this time. My family lives about 100 miles away so I will be going next weekend to visit. The park has been great. I will be working part time which will cover my rent & utilities, and they will work around my work schedule when I start my job in town. We have four single women living in the park, so we are keeping the guys busy with how to questions.
I try to keep in mind all of the stuff I have to look forward to and take it day by day.
Oh betterbloom, I'm so sorry to hear too. Do you have family and friends living nearby? I wish I could pop over with a pot of tea. ((((betterbloom))))
So sorry, betterbloom, to hear about your DH. I hope you are feeling OK and recovering from your loss as much as possible.
I don't know much about Owl's either, but it sounds like you are going to get lucky with a nesting pair again. Please keep us posted with your photos! And your sapsucker is cute, too!
Hope things go better for you soon.
I'm so sorry to hear of the death of your DH. Having just lost mine in mid-Dec. I understand what you are going thru. You need to find a somewhere near normal routine to get back into but be sure to leave yourself time and places for private grieving. The first time you do anything alone that you use to do together even part of the time will be the hardest. May JESUS grant you the peace and comfort only HE can give you at this time and the friends and family when you need them for support.
As for the birds, I know absolutely nothing. Sorry I can't help there.
Leaflady: I know what you mean about doing stuff alone. A friend and I went to bingo the other night. (I never went out with friends). It was very sad to not have him there with me.There are so many of us here at DG that have lost their spouses, many of them were still very young. You say Dec., so that is not too long ago, are you doing okay ?
Hanging out in the bird forum will teach you all you need to know about birds. We have alot of intelligent birders here. I'm still new at it and still have to ask alot of questions.
Lily: That pot of tea sounds good, right now I drinking the Nestea canned tea because I wanted the cans to do a craft with. Otherwise I would make my own.
Tabasco: I hoping they nest in the same tree, people have seen the pair in the tree. If not they will be in the park somewhere.
