Terrible Tornado's. And the weather folks say Central Florida can expect weather like this through the end of March! Something to do with El Nino and the weather patterns!

We had the horrendous Tornado's touch down here in Daytona on Christmas day .... now more came through. Missed us this time, but tore through New Smyrna Beach, just South of here. I woke up about 3 a.m. hearing the thunder so came in and turned the t.v. on ... had to wake hubby cause they were saying anyone from Daytona, South Daytona (area where we are), Port Orange, Ponce Inlet .... TAKE COVER! They predicted it was coming right at us. It was SCARY ....

I feel so sorry for all the people who lost loved ones as well as their homes and possessions. 19 deaths so far, but they are still in the search/rescue mode, so there may very well be more deaths. One family lost Mom and two kids (Triplets) .... one of the Triplets and Dad survived. Another family lost a father and son. Pretty bad with all the folks who are "Lookie Loos" ... Hwy 41 a major thoroughfare was bogged down with so much traffic of people wanting to take pictures and video that the Emergency Vehicles couldn't even get through! How can people be so Stupid! They need to stop and think if it was them or their family and Help couldn't get to them because of all the traffic. I-4 was shut down in both directions because of 4 or 5 Tractor Trailers blown over, one was smashed onto the top of another one, but luckily all the drivers were okay. Quite a few cars smashed on the Interstate also. I heard I-95 north of here was closed because of flooding and roadway damage from too much water! What a mess. We got a lot of much needed rain here. But, My Thoughts and Prayers are with all those folks over in the West Central part of the state who are had to deal with the Tornado's and the aftermath.

Even though I now live in Arkansas, My home town was Deland. I will always miss and love Deland, I grew up there so there are times I am very homesick. My house that my parent's willed to me is now gone. The mobile home park called Hawthorne Hills was where my house was. It is a part of me that was still "home" and held fond memories of my parents.I am still waiting to get more information. I am so upset to not only to lose my house but watch on the news and see pictures on the internet of people I went to school with and grew up with . I saw a picture of a lady I went to school with crying over the loss of her mother. It's just heartbreaking.I was planing to go back home to Florida for a visit in March but now I may have to return sooner. I was hoping my trip down was going to be an enjoyable one with friends and family. I really do not want to see my house as rubble. I do not think I could stand seeing it that way. I am thankful that my parents did not have to go through this as it would have just hurt them too much, or have killed them, which would have been harder for me to deal with than them passing away the way they did. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families that were devistated by the tornadoes.
Here is a picture I got off the internet of the mobile home park where my house used to be..somewhere in that pic is possibly my house.......or whats left of it.

29 deathsas of this morning so sad it could have been any of us :((

(Zone 1)

Yes Allison: It is really sad. I have been watching the news and there was so much destruction. In Volusia County where I live there were 700 homes destroyed and $52.2 Million in damage. That doesn't inclued the $Millions in damage from the Christmas Day Tornado's. But, the most damage with this recent storm was in Lake County. The little town of Paisley had 13 deaths alone, and it's a very, very, small community. I can't imagine how those folks who lost loved ones and their homes and all belonings are coping. I think they must have counselors out in the field with all the other workers.
Our news showed one lady here in town who found something belonging to someone in a city 30 miles away! It had blown 30 miles! Yesterday my Husband found a soggy business check in our front yard, that came from Deland, about 20 miles west of us. We have donated to the Red Cross to try to help in our little way. On the news, one couple said they survived Hurricane Andrew in South Florida in 1992 when they lost everything and now they've lost everything again from a Tornado. I guess it just makes me realize how un-important material things are .... lives being lost to such destruction is the saddest part. I just can imagine what those folks in the areas that were damaged/destroyed are going through right now. It is heartbreaking.

I am keeping all in the affected area's in my thoughts and prayers.

St Joseph, IL(Zone 5b)

I'm very thankful you are all OK. My first husband and his wife are in St. Augustine and she said they heard the "train" and the hail, but they didn't get hit, so...
Lot's to be thankful for during such an extremely scary and humbling experience.
My prayers are with you all.

OMG, 29 deaths??? Yesterday it was still at 20 and they said search and rescue part of the tragedy was over. My thoughts and prayers are in FL.
If it wouldn't have been in the middle of the night, maybe the death tole wouldn't be so high :~((((

violet_grower, Have you heard anything about your house? I pray your house isn't in that picture.

I'm glad our Fla friends are from the Av forum is ok.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes Sad Hubby says about 80 miles from us could have been any of us. I Thanks God each day for all I have :))

Elkins, AR(Zone 6b)

jannich...as of today I do not know if my house is still there, they will not let anyone in the park. From what I have heard 2/3's of the park was destroyed and mostly in the front part. Some homes in the back section are either heavily damaged or still intact. My home was towards the back so I am praying that it might be still standing. Florida power will not let anyone in the park. My son is keeping me updated,so I will hope and pray.
Plantladylin, I am glad to hear you are ok . My son lives in Ormond Beach and thank goodness he was ok also.
I used to live in Paisley years ago and I had friends there. I was able to get hold of one of them on their cell phone and they sustained some damage but are ok,but so many others lost homes and loved ones.

(Zone 1)

violet_grower: I will keep good thoughts that your house is still standing and didn't have much damage. It is so heartbreaking that so many lives were lost and there was so much damage. News reports now say Volusia County had $80 Million in damage. I don't remember what the Damage Estimate was from the Christmas Day Tornado's, but it was up there too. I sure wish they could do something to these mobile homes (older ones) to stabilize them better. They showed on the news last night that Mobile homes built after the 1998 Tornado's are much safter and stable and have been telling folks who's homes were older than that that for $1500 they can have the Tie Down Straps that will help keep the home stable from very high winds. I know my Mom lived in a Mobile Home in Fort Lauderdale area and I am so thankful she passed before Hurricane Rita went through there two years ago .... so many of the old mobile homes in her park were destroyed. Her's was still standing, but no roof, no porches, no sheds, carport etc. My sister and brother in law have a home in the same park that they rent out in the winter. It's right on the golf course and really nice. Theirs is old, but a lot newer than the one my mom had (1964) so they had very little damage.
With Tornado's you just never know the path they will take ... they seem to hop, skip and jump around. But, the damage is so devestating. My thoughts and prayers are with all the folks who were in the path of these latest storms.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

violet_grower do you live in Florida half the year ? Hope your home is Ok.
Seems most homes destryed were mobile homes.
But the Church was built I think to windstand 155 MPH and it was destroyed. Tonado winds are so different than Hurricane winds . Tornadoes take medal and twist it like can openers do.
During a Hurricane here one year a tornado passed by the home behind us and did this to their roof , it was like the roof was twisted in a zillion ciscles like they do with those long balloons. But the home in front of us their carport roof kept going up and down up and down with each new wind. Some blow off but this one going up and down stayed intaked on one side. Hurricaines don't do the twist as Tornadoes and no real warnings with Tornadoes either.
No tie downs will save a Mobile home from a Tornado :((
Were all so Blessed we were only 80 miles away which may seem far but it's not.
I am so Blessed and praise the Lord with Thanks each day, and Praying for all the lives lost and all the people hurt and ones who lost their homes so many people with no where to go :((
God Bless, Allison
