Ebay Buyers Beware!

Brookhaven, PA(Zone 6b)

that auction has ended abruptly, but there is still another one. I informed ebay twice, and the seller, and the bidder of t his auction.

Anyone here that would like the code to put on your website (or ebay auctions) to disable "right click" just Dmail me.. I will dig it up and type some instructions.. They can only get your pictures if they can right click on them!

I went through a TERRIBLE time with people stealing my pictures! (not brugs) long time ago and I don't even want to remember those days.. It was a nighmare!

My brugs take all that away...

No Paul (phicks) it's me...
I'm flat chested...Jack was not.... :-)
See? No bra. :-)

unfortunately disabling right click does not prevent stealing of images. If you are determined to get images, there are many means with which to do it, least of which is just doing a screen capture. You can also view source code to find the url of the image and grab it, you can disable java in your browser, and that will render the no right click code ineffective, etc., so it really doesn't matter what you do, if you have photos on the internet, there are always crafty people who can figure a way to copy it and use it. The best thing to do is put a prominent watermark on any images you post on the internet. Put it right across the middle of the image over the flowers, etc.

Ugly, yes, but makes it harder for people to pass of the image as their own.

Very Sad I have had this happen to me.
Go to Ebay they will remove the auction .

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That is true Mary, and a very good idea..
The good thing about the right click code is it will discourage the "common" thieves.. If your pictures are still being stolen with right click disabled, you KNOW it's theft, not just common copying... It's the lazy or dishonest ebay sellers that steal them the most.
It just makes me sick when I see a "hijacked" photo! I have reported countless sellers on ebay for this. So many that ebay was not able to keep up, and it used up too much of my time tracking them down. When I used the code to disable Right click in my auctions as well as my website, it reduced the numbers of people taking them greatly.. Most of the thieves were just not that educated, they were just out for an easy buck... If they were that educated, they had their own! LOL

edited to add the brug was relisted!

I do have some hints for people to protect images from theft on the web, dmail if you are interested. Remember, nothing is fool proof, though.

only way to protect your pics is to not post them.once online they are open for bussiness.I have had them show up in France on websites. No way to get them to stop, so all pics I post I figure will end up wherever. Not worth losing sleep over. Does that make sense??? LOL I'm confused again, WHERES my meds??

I once found one of my photos posted on The Vatican's website.
Just imagine the possibilities. ;-)
The Dream Team wasn't available...

Thanks for copyright info - I copied and pasted to a new Document just in case - never know - I might get a good picture of a UFO .
My plants are too common for someone to sell pic's of .

LOL Kyle. I think you are probably right esp after reading how Gordo explained it all. Though Gordo, if the Vatican stole one of my pictures for their web site, I would be so thrilled!! LOL. Was it a picture of your artwork?

I have thought of using the watermark across the center of my photos but it makes the photo so ugly, kind of ruins the entire idea of my posting it in the first place. Though if I made a living with my photos, I would not be so accommodating. Also if they are used to make someone else money, it would chafe me a bit. I have gotten inquiries to use a few of mine for web sites specific to a type of plant, like passifloras and I always say sure have it. And the ones that have contacted me from a money making business like a calender, I say lets see some money.

No, Kell. It was a photo of a papaya I used for selling papaya seed. They included it in an article about a French doctor who was using papain to treat the last pope while he was sick.

You know, you don't have to place the watermark horizontally across the photo. If you turn the watermark vertically and just clip the edge of your flower, or place it about 1/3 into the flower image, enough of the image is left to get a good idea of it's characteristics.

Ebay item description and picture theft reporting
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/vero-image-text-theft.html

I like very much, when my pictures are used on other websites. It actually happened more than once, that I ran a google seach using the word 'Brugmansia' and find everything from my old 'Ida' (of 2000) or pictures to B. aurea 'Colombia (of 2006). They are both used on private websites as well as on business websites. It gives me a sense of joy. I have a kind of relaxed approach towards these things :)

Here are a beautiful example:

A french Brugmansia site. The picture was taken back in Sorø in 1990 or -91. The negatives are still in my lowest drawer together with the picture and the framed blown up copy I used to have hanging on my wall in the livingroom. It is from the back yard of Sorø Hotel, where they grew a big B. sanguinea tree and a big B. x candida 'Tutu' in large containers. Ruth and I spend several hours that day talking to their gardener and got a lot of growing tips and was allowed to take as many photos as we liked. It was a good opportunity for me to get better aquainted with my new Nicon EP. The picture was original used in the Danish Brugmansia forum and later in a German and also French equivalent as a sign of coherence and friendship between the three European fora. Now it is here too. Enjoy:

Just one man's (humble) but very long opinion...

Before you judge me unfairly, please understand that I write this post from the standpoint of an admirer of the talent that you and your peers have. My goal here is simply to make you see and maybe think about alternative means to showcase your talent without sacrificing it's beauty. Hopefully, this will make more sense to you as you read on.

A few years after graduating High School (a long time ago ; ) I was reading an Analog magazine (Science Fiction/Short Story Fanzine) and happened to read a story that I had written as a high school English writing project.

After a bit of research (I WAS MAD!!! (at the time) it turned out that my former high school English teacher had published it under a pseudonym. When I confronted him (in person) , he admitted that he always wanted to be a writer, had no real talent and used the opportunity as a way to get "published" and have something to "brag" about to friends and co-workers.

The "rollercoaster ride of revenge" wasn't anywhere near what I wanted or expected. In the end, getting a personal apology from him and a written apology from the publisher had left such a hollow feeling that I felt worse than before. I originally thought I wanted or needed money & revenge (or both) and in the end, my epiphany was that I realized "The Good Old Rule Of "Plagarism "s ia always the sincerest form of flattery" was better than any words could have been. I could walk away with my head held high, knowing that your work was admired, envied and copied because it was GOOD. People don't copy "bad" pictures. People only copy good or great work.

It seems to be easy to fall into the trap of "cover my image with copyrights", "Dave's Text" or even "Big Red "X"'s all over the place instead of showcasing the intent of those great pictures of plants.

BUT! Please understand that any common "free" photo editing software that comes with a $50. camera can cover or remove 95% of the watermarks/text that you just used to "protect" that image in less than 5 minutes.

OR

You can continue to showcase your talents and take those same "stunning" pictures of beautiful plants in bloom, post them for fellow plant lovers to drool over (and sometimes take or use) and enjoy the attention that your abilities (and plants if you are the grower) have won. Overall, I'd agree with your anger, angst and concern that you receive recognition for your work. You deserve it for photographing and/or growing the plants you have taken the time to showcase. But PLEASE don't obscure your talents in an attempt to hopefully keep it "safe" at the expense of turning something beautiful into something plain.

I've seen too many great pictures wasted by this false "protection" and shake my head every time I see an otherwise incredible, jaw dropping picture, covered with "greyed" designs, text, copyrights and other symbols all because the originator (who wasn't selling the image anyway), wanted to insure others weren't using it either?

Sorry (sincerely) for making this post so long.

Honestly, I'm a generally "manly" man and some of you can capture the beauty of a plant or flower so perfectly that I get "misty-eyed" just looking at it.

ikipedia/en/2/2e/Sistine_Chapel_ceiling_photo_2.jpg with the words:

"THIS IMAGE IS COPYRIGHTED AND FOR USE ONLY BY AUTHORIZED PEOPLE THAT DON'T MIND THIS TEXT IN FRONT OF THE SUBJECT SO I CAN REST EASILY KNOWING THAT SOME PEOPLE ALMOST ENJOYED LOOKING AT THIS PICTURE BEFORE I PUT THIS TEXT AND DISCLAIMER ON THE FRONT OF IT TO MAKE SURE YOU DID NOT STEAL IT, EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT SELLING THE IMAGE IN THE FIRST PLACE AND WOULD MOST LIKELY NOT SPEND THE $10,000.00 OR MORE TO DEFEND THIS CLAIM IN COURT.

Just an opinion...hope it makes some reconsider.

Ray

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

It won't make me reconsider! Stealing is stealing no matter what is said to glorify or justify it. I would never buy from a seller who can't produce their own pics, and I would warn all anyone I know to avoid them too. I just can't be flattered when someone stold something I love so much for their own profit.

Ditto to this, I have also made it a pratice when buying Brugs on Ebay to ask the vendor if the photo in the listing is of the actual flower taking of the plant listed in the vendors garden/nursery, it has happened to me that i would received as auctioned, but by the time it bloomed it was something else entirely.
