coffee plants

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has a coffeeplant outside. What kind is it, is it potted or in full ground, do you bring it indoors in winter?
Does is perform well, do you prune, and how, etc...
I would like to plant one, but need advice from Californians from the 9b group, especially.

Thank you,

I used to have a small one in a pot, I left it out on my patio over the winter last year (patio had a roof, and I wrapped the sides in greenhouse plastic to provide a bit of extra protection, temps never got below freezing). It did fine there until my shelving unit full of 4" plants blew over in a windstorm, I was able to recover a few plants from that but the Coffea wasn't one of them. But up til that point it was doing fine, however I couldn't tell you if it'll work in the ground or in a pot but not protected (my guess is it would survive a normal winter, but a deep freeze like we had this year would probably either kill it or damage it badly)

I have one but keep it as a houseplant, we get too cold here. (was below 20 degrees for 6 days!)

There is a reason that all the coffee growing countries are in the tropics. I have tried a large coffee plant in the ground in a protected area of the yard and I am zone 10a and it didn't even make it through its first winter. It is just too cold for them here. The only way to keep one would be in a pot that can be moved inside on those cold nights.

Thank you for your warning! I do not want to be moving pots in and out... So, must wait for the some-day-greenhouse!

Christie,

Just to warn you, greenhouses can just feed a plant addiction. I started with a 4 X 4 greenhouse, then bought a 6 X 12, and now want/need an even larger one.

Thanks Iroot! I am thinking of getting one; I also want a Julie Mango tree... You see; I NEED ONE!!!
