Trying Something New

Silver Spring, MD

I was at the garden shop today and found myself in the bonsai section. I thought that a mini sinningia might look nice in a bonsai pot with some Princess Pine. This is the result.

I plan on misting two or three time each day and praying that the sinningia doesn't die.

Is that a Daphne in the pot flowering? Very nice idea....

Hi, JanetS. I don't think that is what it is. The name on the pot was Serissa "Ahiro Pink".

Nanna - they look great. Good luck with them, I've never done bonsai. Let us know how it goes.

Love it Nann .... is the Sinnigia a mini AV? Can you make them into Bonsai, are you able to wire the stems? I just love those pots, and your plants are beautiful!

Thanks all. The Sinningia is not an av. Same family. The entire plant in the photo is about the size of a quarter. The blooms are trumpet shaped. Check out the stickies at the top. There are some cool pictures of sinningia.

Gosh, I don't know anything about wiring anything. Guess I will have to read up on bonsai-ing.

I love those little bonsai pots for mini AVs, especially trailers. Your idea of using a combination of tiny plants for a group planting is just inspired!

When you put a baby tree or shrub into a bonsai pot with the intention of forcing it to remain small in size, there's often a lot of pruning, shaping, and wiring involved in getting the branches to assume an interesting "natural" shape... I don't know that there would be any point to torturing your little synningia that way! :-)

Here's a leaf-offspring of 'Rob's Humpty Doo' that I call "Humpty Who," in a little oval bonsai pot. These pots are great for minis because they're usually pretty shallow.

Thanks for the hint, Jill. I hadn't thought of that. The bonsai pots would be just perfect. Love your H. Who.

Very cool idea Nanna, hope it does well for you.

Love those Mini's and Trailers. Currently I don't have either ... Just my approx. 12 Standard 's - mostly Noid's, but a couple are named varieties I bought at Rob's. When the weather gets warmer I want to order a trailing variety to try.

Love those Bonsai pots, and yes being shallow they would be perfect for Av's ... where do you find these Bonsai Pots, I really like the looks of them!

Thanks, Jannich

I've seen bonsai pots at HD but I got mine at Behnki's Garden Center. They are having a winter sell right now 50% off all (or at least most) house plants.
