lutea in the greenhouse

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Oops! I meant "luteola" or sunspot.

I got blooms on this tiny (so far) plant in the greenhouse. I was excited because I have never seen these growing wild in Oregon, and actually have never seen these in person before.

I love the long tube on the flowers.

I also have carnea (bush MG) plants doing well. They should have a good headstart when I plant them outside in the spring.

I just had a palmata seedling sprout!

The palmata seeds are different...they look like they have cotton growing on them.

Beth, Can't wait to see the palmata blooms. The carnea looks great.

Hey Beth - The plants look nice...just for the 'taxanomic record'...the luteola is most likely actually Ipomoea coccinea as the pedicel, sepals and capsule structures most closely match Ipomoea coccinea...
The 'palmata' is most likely Ipomoea cairica...the epithet of the mostly synonymous 'palmata' has been applied to just about any plant with 'palmate' leaves...
Do you have any of the 'palmata' seeds left that you could post a closeup of showing the cotton like tufts on the seedcoat(?)...

Thanks...

Thanks Ron, I bought the seeds as luteola but they may well be coccinea. So much misinformation out there! I'll get a photo of the cairica seeds.

These are the seeds of I. cairica

Beth - the seeds posted here

are undoubtedly Ipomoea wrightii...

I guess the "palmata" I bought are I. wrightii, then.

I. cairica and I. wrightii both have palmate leaves, right?

Beth - yes, both Ipomoea cairica and Ipomoea wrightii have palmate leaves...if you have other seeds that you want to post for an ID...post them and I'll 'see' what I can do...

Beth - the picture you posted of the Ipomoea wrightii seeds would be a valueable addition to the PlanmtFiles entry for Ipomoea wrightii here
