Looking for a good source for a wisteria tree

Lindenhurst, NY

I've found white flower farm has this, but it's 150.00, then I found gurneys had a wisteria standard for 24.95 -- I don't have any experience with either one. 150.00 is way out of my price range.

Does anyone know of other good sources for a blue or lavendar wisteria standard?

Thanks

Try buying your own Wisteria macrostachya and maybe train it yourself? Those "trees" are grafted so they're going to be a lot more expensive.

8) "Can I make Wisteria grow like a tree?"

Yes, with a strong stake and lots of pruning you can grow a free standing tree Wisteria.

-The Wisteria should be pruned back to one shoot and this should be trained up a stake to about 6 feet.

-It should then have the growing tip removed.

-After a few weeks it will start to grow new shoots, all the new shoots below 4 feet should be removed and only the ones between 4 & 6 feet left to grow.

-When these shoots are 12 to 18 inches long they should be pruned back to 1 or 2 buds.

-By continually repeating this process over a few years you will develop a Wisteria that will have a strong central leader and branches that are self supporting.
I've never tried this, maybe somebody else has who will comment.

Just pointing this out to you since it was way at the bottom of my post.

One thing though since you live in NY- if you are going to go for a tree wisteria, try the one I mentioned above as opposed to Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis), Formosa Wisteria (Wisteria x formosa), or Japanese Wisteria (Wisteria floribunda).

The one I mentioned above, Wisteria macrostachya, also goes by the name of Wisteria frutescens. The American Wisteria/Kentucky Wisteria or any cultivar will actually bloom for you. The others probably won't bloom for you and you'll plant one of those and be sitting around waiting for it to produce those generously proportioned blooms just like in all the photos and it doesn't seem to happen for many people. I have a really attractive Wisteria 'Aunt Dee' here. That's a cultivar of the American Wisteria. That might work quite nicely for you and it's quite popular so it should be easy to buy somewhere locally.

Have fun and post photos of what you do.
