A tour in the sweet light

Rj...the plant in the photo with Louise and the toppled tree is a bamboo. The picture before that with the Ti is a palm...FULL of spines...killer plant!

Jade Vine has set out long racimes...should start opening in a week or so. Will send pictures.

I put in a jade vine about 6 months ago. It has grown like mad - covers one whole section of my fence. I'm watching closely for it to bloom. Should it bloom soon? Also, can it be propagated by cuttings? If so, how?
You got me started on hoyas in the hoya forum - I now have 20. Its the first thing I look for everytime I'm in a nursery. I ordered several off of ebay - got some good deals. Right now there are three blooming - love it!

I know little about Jade Vines...both the green and the red which look like they should be related but are not. I also have the yellow form which I can't find any information about.

The geen Jade (as well as the red) bloom on year old growth, so I doubt if you will be seeing blooms this year. The BEST way to propagate is from seeds, but stem cuttings CAN be taken. We did about 20 3 years ago and even with a little mist house, only about a 10% success rate. The BEST time to take cuttings is in August/Sept when, of course, the days are getting shorter. Take cuts from the semi hard wood, of about a pencil diameter. I will take phots...the flower is such a showstopper.

Word of warning: watch the growth of all of them. They reach LONG vines out looking to climb on something...even a small potted plant...then they take off like a scalded cat!

Carol I saw a beautiful blue jade vine in bloom at Fairchild last year and was told they don't propagate from cutting (or I would have slipped one into my bag LOL). But it's a stunning plant and high on my wish list.

I have some small plants...have to keep cutting them back because they could encase my shade house in a matter of hours!!!

In the summer I can send seeds!!!

Sounds like Jade Vine is related to Kudzu. :-))))

Every 5-6 months we cut it at about 50' up the trees...they will climb all the way to the top, gather there in a ball and break the tree! DH would not believe me when I told him NOT to use a PVC pipe for the trellis on the shop...but to use steel. I have seen the main trunk crush PVC.... Pretty amazing!!!

Now you have me thinking of The Little Shop of Horrors. :-0

Carol:
Thanks for the propagation help - explains why I haven't had any luck with it so far. I'll wait until summer and try again. I hope it will bloom by then, too.

Hmmmmm, how does one trim a vine 50' up a tree? I am envisioning all those 1040's movies where these guys would walk/climb the palms to get the coconuts. Are you sending DH up there with a machete?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Extension ladder and machete!!!

Funny. We were in Fiji on a tiny island for my 55th birthday...chatting with a fellow tending his coconut trees. When I told him it was my birthday...he climbed a coconut tree in his bare feet, cut down 3 coconuts, came down and opened them up for us to drink... saying Happy Birthday! HE was 60 years old!

That's amazing. I'm 60 and the highest I'm willing to climb is a stepstool!

Thanks Carol.
oh boy..I will be looking for the jade vine pictures. Mine has made it so far, but is looking pretty hagard. Finally the temps kicked back to normal, and I was busy in the dirt today.
