Okay to trim my straggly Dogwood?

Thomson, GA

I have never trimmed a Dogwood before, but this one has very long branches that now reach out and scratch our cars as we turn the corner of our semi circle drive. Any recommendations on the proper way to trim this rather large, straggly tree? I am a little concerned because this past year the leaves were covered with spots and it did not bloom all that well, so it may already be stressed. I don't know much about trees, so I appreciate any suggestions.

I don't prune dogwoods but I'd prune one that was scratching my car. Maybe try pruning it in spring right after it blooms.

I think you may have to post photos of your leaves when you get a spare moment but take a look at this website and see if anything looks familiar-

That is some great info, thanks much! This poor tree has obviously been here a very long time, and I doubt that it was nursery stock, most likely a volunteer. If it was healthy and bloomed well, it would definitely be a focal point in my front yard in the spring, and fall for that matter. I think I will take some soil samples and see if there is something I can do to help it in that regard. The spots (as I recall) resembled the Septoria Leaf Spot more than any of the others.

I think dogwoods have a relatively short lifespan. If so, there may not be too much you can do.
