Convolvulus floridas

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

A member in the Canary Islands says he has this MG growing nearby, convolvulus floridas. I have seen on the web it is used as a synonym for convolvulus arvensis. Are they the same thing?. The DG member says these are a bush form and don't climb.

I wouldn't think so. I looked up some photos of C. arvensis, and it doesn't bush, but twines. Names can be so confusing...

Maybe Ron can tell us what it really is. The DG member is offering to send seeds.

Beth, I believe that Arvensis would never have this many open flowers on one plant at the same time. Probably a new to us specie, and well named. Get lots of seeds if you can. Can you see this with flowers the color of Blue Ensign. I am drooling. Dave is going to love this one. Good picture too. Imagine getting the POWER BLOOMING GENE onto Crocklover's drop dead blue, or onto some of those outstanding fugis, or any good mg. This sp looks like a cornucopia of potential for those of us who like to do our own pollenating. ALSO, you mentioned that you have indicas from two sources, and that one is from Spain. Do you know the pedigree of the other?
I have located some sources too, but wish to not duplicate what you already have.? Frank

The other indicas are from two different sources in the US... and the indica seeds I have are from yet another US source.

Well, I'm drooling over the silver-iness of the leaves - are they really that silver? I love white-flowered, silver-leaved plants perhaps more at high noon in the dog days of August than in the moonlight at night. Wonderful distraction from heat, humidity and bugs. Can you tell I'm enjoying our snowy, blustery evening right now? Just, think, if not for Maryland summers, y'all might never have seen my smiling face around here - lol.

Seriously, I agree with Frank - what fun to play with those "power blooming genes" in our gardens next summer.

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

Beth, I didn't want to come to sharing time with the same things you already have. But then, WHO?, can keep up with your resourcefulness. lol Frank

Not me, but I can provide applause

is Convolvulus floridus...a bush or tree form that does not twine...it's flowers are sometimes fragrant and the root has been the source of Guadil also spelled guyadil...The wood of the sometimes large trunk is fragrant...sometimes known as Rhodium wood...also rhodium oil or oli of rhodium...

It is not cold hardy, but may overwinter in a greenhouse...

I had given out some of these last Spring, but most people didn't get good germination...

I would think that getting some additional seeds would be a good idea...

TTY,...

Ron

Look at all the flowers on the plant! Wow!

It looks like a stress seeder to me because of the thousands of buds going on in what appears to be a rather warm arid background.. In my neighborhood, sometimes a summer storm rolls in from the coast dropping the night time temps down to Sept levels for a few weeks. This sometimes is all it takes to get fall blooms on dogwood, Rhododendrons and Azaleas. It isn't a heavy bloom, because the storm didn't last long. Some years the conifers bear extremely heavy cone crops, usually preceded by a short summer and early cool temps the previous fall. When I was young, and the local feed stores bought cones, they would assay the cones to see how well the cones were filled with seeds. You would then get paid on the basis of how full the assayed cones were, for all your gunnybags of cones. If I were to collect all the seeds off the plant in Beths picture, I would want to give them all the float or sink test before distributing them. Frank

I'll bet stress seeders do real well on Barking Lots hee hee

Good one, Paul!

One day a man took his dog to a talent show recruiting agent. The agent was skeptical, and asked the man to get the dog to say something. So the man asked the dog "What is the thing on top of a house?" and the dog responded: "ROOF, ROOF, ROOF!" The talent agent was not impressed. The man asked to try again, turned to the dog and asked "What is the name of the stuff on the outside of a tree?" and the dog promptly replied "BARK, BARK, BARK!!". The talent agent was getting steemed and the man pleaded, let me have one more chance...and asked the dog "Who was the finest baseball player in the history of the game?" and the dog without hesitation yodeled "RUTH, RUTH, RUTH!!!" and the talent agent lost it and threw the man and pooch out of his office. As the duo were heading towards the elevater the dog looked up to his frustrated owner and said "Perhaps I should have said Dimaggio?"

Yes, I did get a few seeds. I don't know yet if they will germinate. I posted how they look in the plantfile.

HI Beth,

Hope you have great luck with these.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I am going to try to grow them in sandy soil. Hopefully I'll have seeds for all next fall.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

The seed shot hasn't gotten to the Plantfiles yet, so here it is.

I got one to germinate late last summer but it was really slow and didn't survive. I'm going to try again in a couple weeks.

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

i have this one growing its about 2 mnts old now

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Well,
I thought I had a couple more seeds from Ron's trial seeds last year but apparently I only got one.
I check the pot it was growing in last fall to see if there was a tuber or root but nothing. ;-(

Scroll down to the Cs and there is a list of the species native to the Canary Islands, along with this one.
