When and where is this arctic blast supposed to be coming?? Our forecast doesn't get very cold for the next 7 days anyway...
The big freeze coming
We aren't supposed to be getting it either. This weekend's temps will be in the 40s but we've already had a lot of that. Lows will be near 30 but that's not bad at all. All I can say is thank goodness and I sure hope the cold weather will start moving out soon, I'm eager to get gardening!
:) Kim
Last I heard, it may get down to 29 here Saturday night, but otherwise well above freezing.
Here's hoping spring will last as long this year as winter has!!! Wouldn't that be nice?
We have ice!!!! We started to feed the goats with babies in the barn this morning and I heard it hitting the side of the barn.BRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I know that is is about 33*so maybe it will strart to melt soon. The rain here is suppose to be over soon. It was strange to see the iceicles already this morning. I am not ready for this.
Now that we have all of the goats and babies comfy we have to start on the sheep. So far 3 baby lambs this morning. More to come.
Oh, bless their little hearts! What a cold welcome! Tell them I'm pulling for them!
We had one little goat on a heating pad and a blow dryer going last week to get her warm and dry. I have the attitude that if they have an ounce of life and a little bit of will I'll help them. This little goat spent 2nights in the den floor on her heating pad. I really thought our 6 year old would take her to bed with her. She has been named Iceicle and now lives happily in the barn with her momma. Oh the life on the farm in bad weather...nothing else like it.
Have a good day everyone. I am back out to the barn for the day.
Kim...how sweet!!..Can you believe it's suppose to get to 65 degrees this Friday here?..I have several things to plant!!..Keep those babies warm...Jeanne
Well, I wish I had one big green house to heat, but mine are just plastic hoops over things I hate to lose. Our yard j isn't big enough for a gh. So far everything has fared well, but the cold predicted next week might be my undoing!
We did find a great wall-mounted halogen heater at Sam's this morning. Looked like it might work great....but have no walls! Guess we'll buy another one of those heaters from Costco that looks like a fan. ...if they still have any.
Hope this links to old thread that shows what our "greenhouses" actually look like. We have five (not 4). One is over some large tropical hibiscus on opposite fenceline. Good thing our neighbors like us! 'Yard glows at night......

bloomlover...loved the post about the baby goats. You're a warm and compassionate person.....Years ago, before Loop 360 was built, some friends of ours from Del Rio needed to come to Austin to breed a paint horse. It just happened to fall over the time that they had a bumper crop of abandoned baby sheep (what they called sanchos) at their ranch. They decided to bring them too. Somehow they forgot that we had a Great Dane.....We had to keep about 15 lambs in the garage for two really chilly nights, and we wives got up every few hours to feed them warm milk in Coke bottles with nipples. Our daughter was about 10 then, and just loved those lambs. Late Sunday afternoon, after we had all driven all the way around Mo-Pac to 183 to pick up horse....our friends secretly decided to leave two of the lambs for our daughter in our backyard as a surprise! We were surprised alright..especially when the Dane tried to take off the back door. We had to jump in the car and chase them and their horse trailer down the highway, pull 'em over, and convince them that lambs and dogs don't mix in a subdivision. They reluctantly returned and picked up the extra lambs. Our dog searched the yard for weeks for them.
Some how I don't think I could have kept 15 little baby lambs in the garage. What a great friend you must be! We are going to have to graduate some of the older baby goats and moms out to the open pasture this weekend. It is really getting crowded in the barn. My kids brought their sheep that are lambing so we have lots of baby sheep and goats. It looks like mass confusion when we are down there. Baby goats jumping and playing and some of the mommas are trying to butt heads but there really isn't much room for them to play.
I know what is going on my compost pile!!!! Might take a while to break down but that is ok.
Stay warm everyone and if you get a chance come on out to the farm and watch the circus.
I'm finally up and about today after my hysterectomy. Can sit up at the computer now and check on what is going on on DG.
It looks like our Austin forecasters were wrong....thank goodness! The arctic blast is not going to get as far south as Austin. It has pretty much stalled out way north of us. I'm so glad! We have some nice weather right now. Wish I could get outside and pull weeds and enjoy it, but alas, I have to keep myself from doing too much for another week or two.
Michelle
Michelle, I hope you will recover very soon, and be able to enjoy your garden again.
Josephine,
HOpe you can get out in the sunshine today. I felt some of the healing rays already this morning. Be patient, Michelle and don't over do.
Yep...thank goodness. But my parents in Ohio are feeling the full brunt of it.....temps in the teens with a below 0 wind chill. I am not missing that at all!!
:) Kim
Michelle, lots of good wishes and virtual get-well-tea. Take care of yourself, and be as leisurely as you can. You need strength for all that planting in a few weeks! ;)
