Thanks, StonoRiver, the tour sounds wonderful, and next time I'm in Charleston I'll check it out!

Need Well Behaved Bamboo in New Bern
Bad news, Entlie. I was out at Pete's Herbs on Johns Island today and noticed a striking similarity between the Bamboo they've got growing at the entrance to the nursery and those ones downtown. It's a runner! Gorgeous---30 ft high, 1"-11/2" canes, perfect screen, but a runner. I suspect the Charleston Gardener's Club (who's been involved with that "walk"for eons) keeps it whacked back into shape so that it looks like a "clumper". My bad. Should have looked more closely...
Oh well. The tour still sounds great, though.

I am wondering where I can get my hands on some inexpensive golden bamboo. I reside on Folly Beach South Carolina and was wondering if anyone here, like stono, perhaps can point me in the right direction. Something in my area would be great. I am looking to screen around 70 feet and any advice anyone could give me would be great! I am looking for a quick tall screen. Thanks for any advice.
Entlie, Great pic! But it looks like you've got it growing in "high shade" rather than the "full sun" suggested by most of my resources. I'm sure it will survive there, (hell, I've NEVER been able to kill a bamboo yet, and I've managed to kill about every plant species still extant!), but will it reach the height required to be an effective screen grown in the shade? Because you KNOW the developers are coming, just as I know they're coming at me (12 empty acres of beautiful low country natural flora---deep water on the Stono---) is my next door neighbor. To show you how evil I really am Entlie, I'm thinking of buying 50 of the most invasive forms of running bamboo and planting them around those 12 acres immediately after they bulldoze all the 300 year old growth...
RBRJR---don't know of a source for Golden off the top of my head. But a few years ago a home on Folly Beach was featured on the CHS Fall Garden Tour that was a showcase for Bamboo, and I think they were Golden. Can't be sure. Was so smitten by the overall impact of the garden that I didn't even look at individual plants. But I know somebody who will know...will try to find out.
Thanks Stono. Any help would be great!
Sstateham - how nice to see you jumped onto my thread, my darling daughter. If I could only have half the garden talent you do, I'd be happy as a clam! Thanks for the plants - we got them all planted soon after we got home.
StonoRiver, you probably could call my bamboo planting "high shade", but it is planted beneath very high pine trees which really get a lot afternoon sun, once it angles in. Purchased it from Bamboo Headquarters, which recommends it for part shade to sun/shade, so hope it works out. So far so good, but it's pretty early.

A beautiful daughter to dig with; how wonderful for you both!
Yes, it is terrific when we get together to garden, seldom though it is.
Mrs. Moon traveled ok, a little peaked, but I think pulmonarias usually throw fits (I planted a Roy Davidson several years ago that turned black and slimy, then beautiful).
My D'G-er friend, John, (tgiforever) nearby was very appreciative of his own Mrs. Moon, lamiastrum, and sedum. The trade was enhanced by wine on our deck with John and Judi.
That wouldn't happen today - it's cold and blustery!
Love,
Entlie
Glad to hear it managed ok and your DG buddy was happy! Trades are always better with wine :)
I wish my son's used the computer and wish I had a daughter also as they are more caring.LOL
Love my DILs but neither like digging in dirt or canning or crafts shall I go on. One doesn't cook much either but they keep my boys happy.
Great pictures.
PS I have made some homemade blueberry wine wonderful stuff.
Lavina
LavinaMae,
Blueberry wine sounds delicious!
Tryon Palace in New Bern is having its spring plant sale Friday and Saturday, and the gardens are open to the public free those two days.
I think my fig tree is dead.
When are you headed down here again?
Entlie
