CLOSED: ID this bug

Elk Grove, CA

It is tiny files that I tried to kill. I spray the insecticidal soap on the pot and it seems they keep coming back. Any idea what type of files and how to control them?

That's probably a pretty good picture of a fungus gnat

In order to control fungus gnats, you must control the larval stage, which is in the damp soil in your planters. I use Mosquito Dunk - just crumble up a bit in the water when I water. It also comes with the name Gnatrol. Both are Bacillus thurengiensis (Bt) - a bacteria that kills the larval form. It is safe for everything else. No need to use pesticides.
