Amazing Amaryllis

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I've had amazing success this year with my Amaryllis plants. Two are new, but several others were planted out in the garden last summer, brought in and potted up and put into my cold storage. This one, presently blooming is a repeat from last season. I have no idea of the names and don't keep track of one bulb from another. Also last year, some of the new ones were misnamed. There are 4 buds on this stalk.

Here they are about 10 days ago. One new one - a double variety, was just finishing blooming.

Another shot from about 10 days ago. It's hard to get them all in the daytime because I can't seem to force the flash to work on the camera (that's another issue - learning to work this camera). As you can see, several are putting up more than one flower stalk. Only two of these were new this season. And I have two more which are still in the cold storage.

And finally, for now, a picture of them all taken today. Will post more as the others bloom.

Wow, you are going to have one heck of a show there, Ann!
My new one was pink and it's about the same stage as your withered one. But I 'oversummered' one in the garden too, a first for me, and that one is not quite as far along as yours. What I noticed is that the old bulbs send up leaves as well as scapes, whereas the new one I got at Christmastime didn't have any leaves, just the scape.

I'll be looking forward to your pics when things burst into bloom, bet it'll be a sight for sore eyes.... hey, didn't you just have laser surgery? You CAN see now, right? lol

Here's the pretty pink one when it was blooming.

Very pretty. I'm afraid I didn't get a pic of my now whithered one and it's a pity 'cause it was double - the first double one I've had. But i guess it was blooming about the time I had the eye surgery. I can see, but distance vision isn't as sharp as I want it to be. We will see what it settles into.

Regarding the withered amaryllis, do you cut the seedheads off yours or just let it die down naturally?

Hey, I answered the question above! A few days ago. Where did the answer go? Anyway, I said sometimes I left it and sometimes I cut it. Sometimes the remains of the flower start to drip and leave colour everywhere. For this one, it solved the problem in its own way. When I watered them today, the whithered stem had collapsed on its own.

Phew! I was feeling a tad neglected! lol I was wondering because I thought that may be the reason for you getting 2 blooming stalks on yours. Just jealous. Do you fertilize with something special?

I remember some pics on this forum from last year which was the reason I even tried keeping my bulbs over. Anybody else takin' pics this year?

I feed all my house plants with Plant Prod 15-30-15 water soluable fertilizer. I have a large tub for the garden - used primarily when transplanting and I just have a small jar of it inside. Use a 1 litre mineral water bottle (I tried a plastic watering can from IKEA and went back to my bottle 'cause I was spilling water all over.) I put a scant quarter tsp. of the fertilizer in the bottle most of the time - especially after Christmas when the light is getting stronger. For the Amaryllis bulbs, I planted them bare in the garden. Dug them in early September and let them dry thoroughly. Dusted them well with bulb dust and replanted in fresh soil - whatever kind I still had around in a bag. (If it was from Loblaws it might have had some fertilizer in it).

Edited to say - just don't water plants that way before going to the airport. I did just that a few years ago when we went to Finland for 5 days. Got pulled aside for traces of explosives in the swab test they did of my carry on at the airport. I obviously transferred some of the fertilizer solution to my hands to the luggage.

great Amaryllis shots. ours is just opening enough to show that theres flowers in there. It's tall though, it must be growing up to the light. We have in the living room, on the floor. It's the north side of the house. So far the stalk is higher than my inseam, and I'm 5'8" You should've seen me trying to figure out how to tell you how tall it is. It would help if I have a measuring tape.!!

Now that's a funny visual! LOL

I just purchased this amarylis at our local Shoppers Drug Mart for $7.99 (can you tell I'm Scottish and like a bargain ! Except for shoes -then it doesn't matter what price they are !!) It has three stems on it - 2 are in bloom and another one coming. I have never seen one with as many flowers on it.

Wow! I'll say you got a bargain. Is that THREE flower stalks on one bulb? I've never seen that before.

Victoria,, BC(Zone 8b)

Yup ! Three stalks on one very, very fat bulb ! (And very, very tippy over !)

If you want to see super Amaryllis go over to the Bulbs forum - there were a number of threads going there before and after xmas.

Here's new photo taken a short time ago. One more blooming - this a new one this year, I think. And you see another big bud starting to open. Looks like a red one.

Here's the 'Bloosom Peacock', a double that I got at Christmas. The flowers are smaller than usual but still lovely.

That's really pretty, Joan. I noticed that my double had slightly smaller flowers as well. Wonder if that's typical of double varieties. They sure add a welcome splash of color this time of year don't they? Did you blacken the background of your pic? Sure makes the colors pop.

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Joan, that double is gor-gee-ous!

Thank you, yes I filled the background in with black. Joan

Just wanted to jump in here to say that the Amaryllis 'Red Lion' seed that I received in the seed exchange is starting to germinate for me. So far, 2 out of the 4 I have floating in water have nice little white roots on them. Ohhhhhh, this is so exciting!

That flower stalk has an amazing SIX flower buds on it. This shows most of them.

This pic also shows another bulb which will be in full bloom tomorrow and yet another bud opening which will be in full bloom in a couple of days.

Moved the first Amaryllis that bloomed to a less crowded spot yesterday and I found a second flower stalk starting to poke out. I hadn't expected a second flower stalk from this one since the bloom finished a month ago. That one is a double. I'll get a picture of it this time.
