Species Question

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I always thought these two lilies were the same.
L. SPECIOSUM RUBRUM (Uchida)
L. Speciosum Rubrum
I noticed them listed in an on-line catalog as two seperate species lilies. Are they different? Now I am confused. Help?!?!

Uchida is a selection from the species that has been propagated (cloned). It is not a separate species. Think of it as growing a lot of rubrum from seeds with some variation from one to another (more spots, fewer spots, different intensities of pink etc). Uchida was considered exceptional in coloring, form etc... Of course it follows that it is not a hybrid like many of our favorite lilies. Check out all the "named" rubrums entered in the Lily Register...

So if you ordered rubrum, you could get any variety of the strain? Whereas they have cloned one "Uchida", which is an exact clone. I'll get this one of these days. Makes me think I should have ordered Buggy Crazy's Rubrums. I only have "Uchida" in the rubrum family
Thanks for your help.

I ordered 10 of buggycrazy's rubrums and they bloomed last summer. I was very pleased with them and the price was right. I think I paid $2.50 (10/$25.00) and of course the bulbs were huge, minimum 2". There was some variation, some with perhaps more spots, some having spots further towards the petal tips. I labeled them as I did pollinations but the winds blew most of the labels off. I should have known better lol. Next year I'll secure with tape.

You know, I tgought and thought hard about buying them, but this "Uchida" I planted in 2005 never came up in '06, I dug '06 fall and there was the bulb, it never even sent up a leaf or anything. In any case, I will try Buggy's next fall if she has them. Your labels blowing off sounds like something that would happen here lol.
I am finding I am missing the Lily Forum and all of the posts during busy bulb times, buying times and flowering times. Can't wait to see this place buzzing again. I miss it.

Ditto!

I hope you replanted your Uchidam. Chance are it will make an appearance eventually.

I did replant "Uchida" and crossed my fingers while doing it, along with telling her how beautiful she looked, even as a bulb lol! But that if she flowered, she'd even be more beautiful ;0) Hopefully her long winter's nap will help her to change her mind this year lol.

I had some orientals that took two years before deciding to bloom. I thought they were totally lost and then last summer they just started showing up. It could be that they were too small to begin with or that they needed time for root development and to settle in. The problem with some of these finicky bulbs is remembering where they are planted.

That's strange behavior for an oriental. Once LONG, LONG ago, I ordered 20 Stargazers from Michigan Bulb Company, from a deal I saw in the paper. I remember telling my mom what a great deal I got and she just laughed. She said I would be getting bulbs the size peas (I didn't know what size they were normally), and of course, she was right. I didn't know any better; it was shortly after asking a woman in a flower shop if it was possible to grow Stargazers in our climate. The deal was too good to pass up, for the $5 or so, including shipping. These did very little the first year, maybe shot up one leaf (kind of like a scale), the second year each had a blossom or two, well by the time we moved, they were nice sized. I just remember how disappointed I was that not even one of those poor things flower that year. Oh yeah, and I was on their mailing list FOREVER! Ugh!
Kind of fun though, when you forget about those orientals of yours Beak and they just "start showing up". With "Uchida', I just thought one of the resident deer munched it up, bulb and all! Hope she makes an appearance this year. She was lovely in bloom when I got her in '05.
