Oaks already sprouting

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

I noticed this morning that two white oak acorns that I planted already have about an inch sprout above ground. What should I do now? It is much too early. Do I need to keep them covered when it gets below freezing or leave them alone?

Cover them. Giv e them plenty of mulch and keep em warm if they in the ground. You can always pul the mulch back when it warms up.

All my babie s have been brought under shelter and they lot s bigger than yours and your gonna be even colder than me tonight and tommorrow night.

Glad ya got some seedlings growing. Aren't new babies such fun!!!!!!!!

I am in Atlanta and my HUGE maple tree thinks it is spring. This is no small sapling but a huge, old tree... This weather really disturbs me. I don't like the fact that my hyacinths are up in full bud or that I have a hundred iris throwing up bud stalks or that I have already had to cut my narcissus to bring into the house as we have a fine ice covering this morning... but that a huge, old maple would think it is spring in January...????? Putting out little red swelling buds... :(

Those look like the flowers of Red Maple (Acer rubrum) and it's not that unusual for them to bloom very early in the season. Even up here in Kansas, I've seen them bloom as early as Christmas before. The more usual time up here though is February, and I imagine January isn't too much out of the norm down in Atlanta.

It is out of the norm for this tree. I usually see this in March. In fact, I always wait until April to give my patio a good spring cleaning as the maple seeds/pods/etc are usually gone by then. I walk my gardens every day to see what changes. I don't remember this tree budding this early but perhaps I am being paranoid as so much is blooming that should not be. I know it is not so unusual to see bulbs pushing up the greenery this time of year but it is very unusual to see the buds and the flowers in January... plus the flowering quince, star magnolia in full bloom, etc.

I usually use the oaks as a sign of real spring though. My big oaks are not showing leaves yet. :)

That's because Oaks are too smart to be fooled so easily! hehe :)
