Yesterday during lunchtime (and a peak feeding time for the backyard birds) there was a sudden scattering of my feathered friends, not just to their protective shrubs but out of the general vicinity~
Soon after who swooshes in but this guy (or gal)! A Cooper's?
He didn't stick around long for a better pic but the regular feeder birds were scared out of their wits and didn't return for quite some time!
Some New Visitors!
oh nice shots
Tough call on the Accipiter, but I'd probably go with Cooper's. Yep, Ladder-backed for the woodpecker.

Nice to see a different woodpecker! Great shots of the hawk Amylen!
Thanks Resin and Pelletory! He'll probably be back now that he knows where all the neighborhood birds hang out... :)
Great photos!
Very nice shots, I'd say!
Do I know that sound amylen? Yes! I hear it several times a day in the fall. Only about 25-50 birds are right here beside my window in the rosebush. My next door neighbor also feeds birds, scads of them! Two kinds of hawks come through here on a regular basis, Sharp-shinned and Coops. I am situated on a high point in this sub-division too.. that may also attribute to being hawk-eyed. LOL! I haven't witnessed any actual attacks in my view here in the back, but I have seen a couple aftermaths of them.
Such as last Sunday where some lucky hawk abscounded with one of the Collard Doves.;; I looked away for a moment and looked back. All I saw were big wings and feathers flying in the air... then they rested softly on the ground in a concentric pile of nature happening.
That is a really good picture, good detail!
o/~o~
Thanks all! :) I just want better,better... Deb, sorry to hear about your collared :( Our subdivision is situated several blocks next to nothing but mesa to the west and several blocks from a golf course to the east so I feel your pain ~None witnessed, but saw the chasing of and crashing into a window and subsequent death of a dove several months ago :( we were so sad~ nature can be cruel sometimes...
Amylen, A hawk came through again about a hour ago, and as usual freaked all the birdies out! One of the Doves smacked into this window not looking where it was going... I saw its little beak and shoulder pressed up against the window for a split second. The Dove is alright though, didn't see it when I went out to look.. close call!
Appreciate the aww and :( , but actually that is what they eat.. To me it is an 'er go', such is the circle of life out there.
Deb
Great shot of the Flicker Amylen!!! I can't wait to see my first one!
The hawks are great, but the flicker is so special. That is a really great shot. We don't see them here, not in my yard anyway.
Thank you all! :) Great pics Deb! Looks like my Coop (?~if that's what it is, just saw your other pics) too!
...looks like the snowstorm is leaving town, we got a whoppin' 1 inch so far... :(

Amylen, I have tons of Flickers, but I've never gotten a picture anywhere near as good as yours - that is really impressive!
Great hawk photos, everyone. I shooed one away yesterday as it sat up in the Alder eying all my fine feathered friends. Didn't have my camera with me and he was waaaaaayyyyyy up in the tree anyway.
Thanks so much Murmur! He's just a gorgeous fella~ I love seeing the reddish undersides of his wings... one of my favorite visitors :)
