Good idea!

Here is the answer I received:

The import requirements will depend on the plant species involved and
factors such as whether the plant will have soil with it. Some plants
will require an import permit and other may require a phytosanitary
certificate from the country of origin.

Houseplants from the USA can often be brought back to Canada (some
restrictions do apply). Detailed information on houseplant requirements
can be found at:
http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/protect/dir/d-01-03e.shtml

Should you require additional information after reviewing this
material, you can contact the Plant Import Unit directly at:

Johanne Coulombe
Import Control and Enforcement Officer
Export/Import Section
Telephone: (613) 225-2342 (4331)
Fax: (613) 228-6605
Internet: coulombej@inspection.gc.ca

Thank you for using the CFIA web site.

So Steve sounds like it depends on what you want to bring up and whether there is any soil.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Again I wish we didn't have a border. Well we shall see what they have and what I can bring. No time to research now 14 to 16 hrs of work days. And I have 9 more to go. Euuuuch! Steve

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Important: It looks like I will have to change the dates - I think it will have to be either June 2/3 or June 16/17. Please let me know ASAP which you prefer if you are planning to come!

Sorry folks!

carol

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Carol
I don't think I can come for 2/3 but would have to leave it for the last minute as I get back from England that weekend. The 16/17 is fathers day and my daughters birthday , so that would be not do able.
I will just have to hear about the fun you all have and I'll hope to see you next time.
Ann

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I can't do the 2/3 my beautiful wife is still working hard. 16/17 is good for me.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Sorry to say that changed dates dont work for me. Maybe we could still meet somewhere June 9/10th. After all, some people will be staying in a hotel, so we could use that as our base.

inanda

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Oh we could still meet that weekend I just am probably going to have another committment on Sunday the 10th that I cannot avoid!

So thats allright. What is a few hours out of one day. In Victoria, lots of us were off doing our own thing at different times. After all, we all have gardening interests, but many other interests as well. So, are we back on track for the weekend of June 9/10?

Inanda

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Just give it a few days folks until I know for sure about my agility seminar . I hate the thought of inviting you all here and then disappearing for half the time!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I'm pretty agile I could teach you Fancyvan. LOL

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks Steve!

(Unfortunately this is not a seminar with the dogs but a computer seminar teaching a database!)

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Carol, don't worry about it. Maybe people who have never seen it, would be interested in watching agility. There are tons of things to do in Calgary. We don't all have to do the same things at the same time, do we? As I said earlier, at the last Cdn. RU, we were not all present for all activities.
inanda

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Oh well. I wrote the above while Carol was posting too.
Inanda

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Hi All
I am in for what ever we want to do on the 9/10 or 8/9 or just 9 .....that weekend.
Everyone seemed to do many things with great flexability at the last RU and as Inanda said, it worked.
Ann

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Well I want to go to everything green in Calgary. LOL I will follow anyone who knows where they are going. I am anxious to see all of my friends up in Canada. Steve

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

OK folks we will leave it on 9/10 no matter what (but I am still hoping my seminar can be changed to the 17 so I can have the whole weekend free for the RU!)

carol

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Just want to confirm that the Prairie RU will indeed be mainly the weekend of June 9/10 ( but you can come earlier or leave later if you want!) My seminar is definitely moved to the 17th! Yeh!

This is a branch of Forsythia which I brought in a couple of weeks ago to force.

Thats great Carol. So now, where is your nearest decent hotel/motel? Where do you live in Calgary? Maybe you could put your address on DG address site. If you don't feel comfortable with this, then maybe let us know what bus line you are on/near so tht people who do not know Calgary, can have some idea where to stay.

Ginny

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Good Carol. Karen and I will be there on the morning of the 9th. Looking forward to the get together. Still trying to figure how to get plants up there. I have some time now and will contact customs. Steve My Hamamelis is looking pretty good today.

I am listed in the address exchange already.

I live in the old inner city south west community of Killarney- I am very close to Crowchild Trial , Glenmore Trail and Sarcee Trail which are major north south and east west routes.

There is an area of hotels just across the river (north)- accessible easily from Crowchild Trail with a number of hotels. The area is generally called Motel Village and I will get a list of those hotels for you - probably the best location . There is also a Holiday Inn on McLeod Trail which is pretty convenient - Pam (lilypon) stayed there last year so can give a verdict on the accomodation.

Also most of the places I have in mind to visit are in the south west quadrant .

Got a busy weekend going here and tomorrow afternoon I am getting my first foster sheltie. Next week I will be busy doing trial entries for an agility trial end of April and then will have a breather for about 3 weeks before the trial becomes all consuming the last week.Garden Show coming up early April too but Im not involved in the planning - just a day of volunteering and checking out all the booths! So I will get out the hotel information as soon as possible.

I can put up 1 person here and if anybody is travelling in a camper please let me know - could actually park a small camper on the pad in my back yard - or I can get campground information.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Hi Carol
I will be staying with my Mom and Dad in Springbank. They have room for Lynn too if she is able to make it. It's fairly quick to get to the south west from their house and I know this cause my one sister lives down by Dwinton.
Would anyone mind if my Mom tagged along to a few spots? She is a gardener at heart and I think she would enjoy it. If anyone minds I won't even ask her , I thought I would ask all of you first.
Carol if you are getting a rescue does that mean you will have 3 babies to look after.
How the heck do you have time to get on the computer? Oh boy I'll have to stop asking questions then you won't be on this too long.
Looking forward to the RU.
Ann

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

LOL Ann_ I spend way to much time on the computor but come spring I will cut back once I can be out in the garden.

My rescue arrived this afternoon. He is 11 months old and only weighs about 10-11 lbs I am told Sure is skinny. This is one sheltie who is going to be allowed to eat all he wants for a while!

Carol you are an angel. It is so good in the veterinary profession to work with people like you who foster the unwanted until someone can provide the love they need and deserve. Well done! this is my new arrival on Friday. "MacKenzie" in preparation and honor to the first explorer and mapper of Upper Canada. Oh yeah she has a perfectly shaped apple black spot on her back.(Mac)

What a sweety - will you bring her with you? What is the breed? And how come she is MacKenzie if she has an apple on her back? :~)

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

"Apple Mac" computers = MacKenzie because she will be paddling the rivers in Canada with me and experiencing the same as the great explorer. She is a Jack Russell Terrier. Yes she will be coming up with us because we are driving back to Michigan through Canada for a change to visit my parents.

Ah! Makes sense now!

Carol
He is Sure a cutie! I hope you still have him when the RU is on, I am a sucker for that Lassie look .
Steve
Traveling with a "whirlwind" will definatly be an experience!

Your rescue is quite beautiful Carol. Or will be after some TLC and puts on some weight.

I looked for a sheltie rescue for about 2 years and finally found an almost sheltie at the Nanaimo shelter.

No tattoos/chip on yours? He /she looks lovely.

Here are some of ours. At least, used to be, before I moved into Winnipeg full time. Lots of our rescues were too old to be adopted so they just mucked in with ours. At least they had a good end of life.
Edited to add caption.

Dogs are busily eating all the carrot peelings that go onto the floor for them.

Steve glad to see you have had the time to heal and replace the buddy you lost last year. A JR will keep you hopping. I am going to swift current to look at a puppy in april. Yes, Cap is still fine but slower each week and i think if i handle it right it will be good for her to have a puppy to boss and train. loking forward to seeing you in June.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Good for you Lynn you will have the joy of youth and the love of Cap to carry you through the long days at work. You are a special person and I feel blessed to call you a friend. I too look forward to the time in Calgary. You guys will be surprised at how easy going this little girl will be.
Inanda how can you survive with all those "Germans" under one roof. They are beautiful. Steve

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

AT the time I was living outside Winnipeg, surrounded by fields and community pasture so.... lots of room for lots of dogs. A kennel in fact.

We had the prairie daxie rescue as we had lots of room and could work with them. My social life was mainly dogs, dog shows, dog playtimes(winter) and lilies & iris. After one very bad winter, decided I couldn't dirve 50 miles back and forth on an often closed highway to get to work on time. Found an apartment in Winnipeg for bad weather months, only going north for weekends. Then kennel closed due to owner's eyesight and property sold.

Still see the dogs now and then as I still go to play days sometimes. Miss them greatly.

Prairie RU. Time to see who is coming and where we will all stay. If in hotels, lets all choose the same one.

Plants to swop. Lets start a list of who has what.

What activities... Gardens to visit, nurseries, public places??? You can see I don't know much about Calgary.

Ginny

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

HI Ginny.

I have a dog trial this coming weekend - I am Trial Secretary , will be busy all week getting the paperwork ready for printing and then run the trial! Once that is over my time will be devoted to gardening and all related pursuits like a DG RU!

I will post some information about the most convenient hotels .
I am planning to arrange visits to a couple of interesting private gardens and there are lots of places to buy plants if you want. And some neat public gardens too.

Patience for a few more days!

And what do you think about starting a new thread for the plant swop?

carol

p.s. one of the things Bailey and I will be doing next weekend! (but not outside!)

Have fun Carol
Talk to you later.
Ann

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

And of course as soon as the Trial is finished it will be the first week in May and THAT is when I do the rounds of all the greenhouses and buy-buy-buy! Ask Pam!

Pam sitting in my back porch last May after one of our expeditions.

Thumbnail by fancyvan
Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

But...but...but...Pam brought some flax back from the Victoria RU - or is that one yours? I see all kinds of goodies on the table there too.

This spring fever feeling is quite terrible. The buy buy buy must buy feeling I mean. Luckily seedlings are quite exciting too. My 3 year old martie seedlings have poked through this week. They look so strong that hopefully I'll have some bloom from them. Three years, thats pretty good. More likely next year though.

Can't wait till iris season starts and our iris and daylilies and... and ... JIs arrive from Ensata.

Cheers
inanda

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Yup she bought that one here - seems to me she even talked the garden centre into some sort of good price reduction. All the rest of that is mine from a days shopping - there was probably 3 times that much when we finished!
