Proposal for a Prairie Round Up.
OK I said I would post something this month so here is a start.
As I have never organized or been to a RU there is a lot I need to know.
I am posting a series of questions. Would appreciate if you would answer the questions specifically and then add any comments you wish at the end.
Location is Calgary, Alberta.
1. Would you come?
2. What date do you prefer? Weekends of June 2/3 or June 9/10 (I am staying away
from 16/17 as there is a proposed RU for Vancouver Island – just in case somebody wants to come outhere)
3. How many days should this be? Saturday/Sunday, or Friday/Saturday/ Sunday, other?
4. What do you want to do ? visit with other DG members
Visit local gardens public or private
Visit local greenhouses
Other?
5. Where would you stay? Hotels ? Camping?
If you live in Calgary or nearby could you put up somebody or do you know people in Calgary who would put up out of town members?( My house is pretty small but I could put up 1-2 people of they don’t mind sharing the bed!)
6. Do you want to do a plant exchange?
7. Coments and suggestions please.

Prairie Round up
Carol
Lynn and I will be back from Chelsea on May 31st so the 9-10 might be easier for us .
My Mom and Dad live in Springbank so we will be able to stay with them. I'm not sure if she would have room for more but I will check. She is on an acreage so there would be a parking spot if someone has a motorhome.
Friday , Sat or Sunday is open , with this much time I can be flexable.
Visit local gardens and green houses that you think we would like. My Mom may have some ideas as she belongs to Springbank garden club and has a few secret spots. I will ask her and advise. Also isn't there a saturday market called Millerville or somthing like that? I think I read somewhere
It also would be fun to have an informal get to gether and visit. Some kind of potluck or order in.
Plant exchange is also a good idea even though this may be a bit tricky for me, being away just before, I wasn't going to start too much and leave them to my hubbys black thumb.
Please let me know if I can help in anyway.
Ann
1. Yes I would come (probably too soon to say for sure)
2. 2/3 would be preference, but can be flexible.
3. 1 or 2
4. Visit local greenhouses. Visit public gardens. Visit DG members
5. Motel.
6. Plant exchange will probably happen according to arrangements that are made ahead of time. I would bring whatever I had arranged and probably extras to give away. Don't think it would be a major event.
7. Don't fuss.
I'll be out West visiting family, likely around the last 2 weeks of June so it looks like it would be too soon for me, too.
Sandy
Carol I can't say I'll be there (unless DH has a course at the right time) but I must admit one of the places that I'd love to have seen, a month or two later, was that man's house/business where I purchased the hens n' chicks (you had a pre-order come in)...... his gorgeous well planned yard was filled to the brim with hardy (tho very exotic) species plants!!! Ü
Your yard was such a treat (so many early blooming pretties there :) and there too I'd have loved to have been able to visit it again and again as the season progressed.

Ah yes that was Rundlewood Gardens. A great place to visit- one can arrange private visits since they are only open 2 days a week.
Pam -speaking of hen'n chicks I am ordering some from a place in Ont. called Cavendish Perennials.
http://www3.sympatico.ca/semps/catalogue.html
They have lots of gorgeous colors. Then I want to make some tufa troughs to fit around the curve of the back patio and plant them with hen'n chicks.
TV ads are a wonderful time to check in. ;) Yep that would be the place :) and quit tempting me! :) I never thought I'd fall that much for them but seeing his very well established collection (and how he displayed them :) really made a lasting impression on me (now if I could only talk DH into building (a) stone wall(s) ;).
http://www.telusplanet.net/public/rundlegd/ who'd a thunk such lucious hardy beauties lived on the prairies!?!?!
Wow! Blue poppies in Calgary? Yeah, who'd a thunk! Just gorgeous. Anybody know what that blue flower in the first picture is? Looks so nice with the yellow globeflower.
Sandy
Sandy ues we can grow b;lue poppies in Calgary - just need to have the right spot! I tried one once but killed it - it got lost under some larger plants and forgotten !
I dont know what that blue flower is in the Rundlewood picture - Camassia comes to mind but I can find out.
If it's not too much trouble, I'd love to know the name of it, thanks!
Sandy I was right!
Camassia cusickii Zwanenburg
I think I had some years ago - think I might try again. It is a bulb.

Thanks so much for checking that out, Carol. I don't know why I've never tried it before. It's gorgeous! It's not one of those you have to dig up and store indoors over winter is it?
Sandy
Well if Rod is growing it in Calgary I doubt it!
I dont think they have anything in their garden that is not hardy.
Ok, thanks. I'm off to find a source....
Any solid dates for the Calgary round up yet. I couldn't find one. We SWern Canadians would like to go up and get involved. Steve
Oh I'm sorry Steve I just have not been able to give the RU any attention. Stepped in late last month to be Trial Secretary for a local dog agility group when the other one resigned in a snit about something! The trial is this coming weekend so things will calm down after that.....at least until mid March when it is opening date for entries for my own agility groups trial - and I am the trial secretary for that one!
And I need to go and check when the Vancouver Island RU is scheduled - dont suppose people would be coming that far but you never know so I don't want to conflict.
carol
OK I just didn't know thanks Carol.
Carol
Just so you know I checked on the thread and the gang out there look like they are aiming for June 16-17. I know you are busy so I had a look and am letting you know. Don't worry about answering, we can talk when things slow down for you.
Ann
OK folks I am going to propose the dates of June 9,10 for the Prairie Round up with 8 and 11 June in there too for anybody that wants more time here.
Who's coming?
I am going to bounce that off my DW. I might get her to partake of a trip into the dangerous northern Canadian wild lands. She gets out of school that friday and if no snow days she and I would be there. I have to meet you guys. Steve.
Good dates for me.
edited to add:
Maybe tis time to start a list of who has what for trade/swop. This gives participants time to root cuttings etc. I promise you, no marmalade his time though.

SHould we maybe set up a seperate thread here for plant/trade swop at the RU so posts dont get lost in this thread?
Carol - Unfortunately I can't commit to a full weekend of garden fun as we are having out of town visitors during that time. However, since I am just an hour away and depending on how your schedule (and ours) works out, it would be great to join in at some point to meet everyone.
Susan
Maybe that should be the potluck supper on the first night?

Carol
Count me in and I will check with Lynn.
Ann
for me it will depend on what new disasters i find at work when we return from England. will be there at least one day and for the whole thing if manageable.
We never have disasters at my work but I am only a humble veterinarian not an Atlas who keeps Edmonton fat and sassy. Hello my friend! Steve
Yes, but are you a sole practitioner, let alone owning a Fine Dining restaurant like jagonjune. My s-i-l is an executive chef for a hotel chain. Amazing dramas can happen at the drop of a hat, often staffing.
inanda
I can't promise for sure but chances are real good for me for the Sunday..If all the staff show up for work and no disasters I may beable to squeeze in Sat. also. Is there anyone that wants to make a day of it out at the Tyrell Museum in Drum? If so let me know and I will arrange some things for us as I have a slight IN to the museum.
Dianne
Oh boy my hunny bun is going to let us come up to Calgary for the round up. I am going to be digging and splitting perenials in a month and I will get the list I'm bringing up. We are going to get there probably Sat am. Your SW canadian. Steve
Thats great Steve! Once I know what needs splitting I will post some too - maybe we better start a trade list seperate from this one.
great steve - i think we will have to make you an honorary canuck!
Maybe we could 'white hat' him in Calgary!
Steve,
Make very sure to wash all roots VERY CAREFULLY. NO SOIL at all. eg If bringing iris, scrub with a scrub brush.
inanda
Hey the dirt in the states is quite clean already. LOL I guess I never thought about that border that shouldn't exist between us. Sometimes I wish we had won on the plains of Abraham up in Quebec. Can I bring any plants across? What is the issue with the dirt? I am not bringing any bulbs or tubers.
I dont know what the rule is except I do know the plants must be bare root presumably avoid bringing any pests into the country.
I was on the govt website trying to get some information but not much help so I sent them an email to ask. Will let you know what they say.
Ag rep here in Winnipeg says you can bring growing things across but I will get the correct documents because border guards may not know quite all the rules and regs.
Inanda - thinking about the dramas 4 ostrich eggs caused Canada customs in Dec last when I brought them back from USA>
