Hi
Is it cold enough for everyone? My DH just called and our swimming pool is frozen over.
(Yes I work and he is retired.)We live in Concord where we get the rare freeze.
This is suppost to be zone 9.Ha.
My poor plants are all dead! My gardens have turned into a mini plant graveyard. So sad.
I do live in CA Bay Area don't I. This is the coldest I ever remember since I moved here in
1968. I'm scared to go look at the orange tree and the subtropicals that are planted in the
ground. I bet they are all lost. I have alot in the greenhouse but so many in the ground.
How are you all doing in this freeze? I'll try and take a picture of our frozen pool tonight
when I get home. Wonder if the Grandkids want to go ice skating.

Swimming pool frozen
jlt: I live in So Cal, but in the desert, next to the Az border. This is the worst I've seen in the three years I've lived here. We are use to complainning about the hear, not the cold. I have mostly irises, which are pretty hardy, so it did no damage to them. I just started growing callas a couple of months ago, and after some leaves had to be cut down, I'm now starting all over with them. I've now brought some of the callas inside and will keep them inside until it warms up. A couple of lavender plants are black so I'll cut them back and see if they come back up later.
Global Warming ? HA !
What a shame Linda. It froze! Amazing. So much damage. One more night of it too it looks like. What a shame. The news says it will cool quickly tonight too. Shoot. I hope your plants are not as damaged as you think!
WOW betterbloom, the desert is so cold too?

I think that your callas will come back. Mine have survived everything since way before 1970 and there was at least one pretty big freeze since then. We can all hope anyway.
Hello, I'm new to Dave's - this freeze has prompted my joining - I live in Hemet, CA. (Very desert-y, not quite as arid as Blythe, but close). I'm so sad! All my plants are wilted and turning black. Orange, lime, lemon, fig, succulents, cacti, palms, segos, geraniums, schefleras - everything except the jasmine and the carrots in the veggie patch. My 6 foot pachypodium brings tears to my eyes - I'm sure it's dead, this time.
Hottest summer I can remember, now the coldest winter - amazing!
Betterbloom - I'll bet all the snowbirds over by Quartzite are wishing they went to Florida this year!
(Do I have any neighbors reading this? Hemet, San Jacinto, Perris, Temecula, Winchester, Menifee, etc?)
Stef
Hi Stef,
Welcome to this wonderful site. Yes, we are having a VERY unusual winter here in Calif. I also have many frozen plants and I only live 3 miles from the ocean in zone 10.
If you would like to see who is close to you in proximity to where you live...Go to your home page and at the top are some tabs. Click on "Extras" and in the 9th sentence down it says to find people close by. Click on that and it should show you who and how many people are in your area. This is a great addition that Dave has given us this past year. I do know that there are several people close by in your area, just can't remember their names right now.
Also I wanted to give you a heads up about a DG SoCal Roundup (garden get together) that we have once a year. The last 2 years it's been held at one of our members ranch in Temecula. I think our next one will be in May or June. Keep an eye out for any info on it....you will have a great time, I promise. :-)
See ya around the forums,
Donna
Hi all,
Thanks for shareing my pain. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what survives. Most of my brugs look real bad. I have lot of tropicals like bananas, cannas, castor bean, elephant ears etc. They have been in my yard for a few years with no more than a little leaf burn until this year. I was so stunned that the pool froze I couldn't believe it. The pool sweep was running under the ice.
Hope something survives for everyone.
Linda
Hi Stef (with an f),
Welcome to Dave's. We are almost neighbors, I live in French Valley.
I too fear I've lost several special plants, I babied 2 avocado trees though the summer heat for two years and now I'm afraid we may have lost them to night, after night, after night of freezing temperatures.
I'm pretty sure the citrus will come back (knock on wood).
Good thing roses are so cold hardy or you'd hear me singing the blues all they way in Hemet.
Donna, thanks for that suggestion about the DG link to those around you! I've only been around DG since last summer (when my succulent addiction began) and I did not know about this feature.
I'm in southern CA...San Diego...and looking for those in my area -- and right now, share freeze sob stories :(
kim
Hi Kim, glad I could be of some help.
We have had a big DG get together in Temecula for the last 2 years and might be having it again in May or June. One of our DG members, drdon, has hosted it at his ranch and we have had a wonderful time. Keep an eye out on the Calif. forum and you will get a taste of what's all about. You will be able to meet many members from your area too.
Donna
