Sunday Birds

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

What a day of bird watching this has been..Peering out my window into the trees dripping with icicles. The birds seemed to gobble more viraciously as the icy rain came down. I am about to post about 15 shots of birds I saw today, (just so you know how long it will be until all the pictures are posted.)

#1 Ruby-crowned Knglet..(female)

Here's my little super-star.. Our Orange-crowned Warbler. She shares her suet with the Kinglet, and a few Starling that come to nab a bite. She shares her meal worms with the Wren..I love this little bird!!

More of the wee Warbler, can't get enough of her!

#13 This one appears to be a Collard.. note the darker under wing tips.. Correct me if this isn't the case.
One just like this was swept up by the Sharp-shinned Hawk today... in a flash!! All he left was a pile of white feathers strewn in a big swath across my garden beds. I saw it... all wings and feathers flying. Too fast to capture even on on digital...

Thank you Donna!! Sorry to any sensitive but the Hawk had to eat too.. I adore my Hawks.. and love the Doves just the same too. Nature takes it's course...

Last, but not least a pack of about 14 hungry Mourning Doves.. They got to the plate first.. right at 7AM. I love the range of colors on them, their gentle nature and their beautiful cooing sounds.

What a Sunday for watching birds!!

Hugamatics all!!

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Nice pictures Deb. My neighbor also has a pile of feathers outside, and one leg. Either the hawk dropped it or doesn't like the legs. It was quite large, so probably from a grackle. Looks like it was a good birding day for you.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Many are good birding days here Betterbloom.. Just today with the icy weather I had more time to post the pictures I took..Plus the winter blast made them all a bit anxious to load up on food, I suppose.

Glad you liked them!! Thank you!

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Deb, all of your photos are super. I am just crazy about Kinglets. What kind of camera do you have?

Debnes,

All your photos are great! Love the ones esp. of the adorable Kinglet and Warbler and the sweet Juncos! You're so lucky to have the Kinglets and Warblers! You'll just have to share more of them with us! Haven't seen the Juncos lately, but I know they're out there.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Deb, wonderful photos - glad you had such a good photography day (and the time to post 'em!). Love your Kinglet and Warbler!

It was like that around here today as well - in fact, I was outside about 8:00a.m., with the temp about 22, unable to resist taking picture after picture!!! DH gave me a fabulous white "Turkish Cotton" bathrobe for Christmas - and over a pair of sweats and a sweatshirt, it kept me warm as toast . . . except for my feet and my hands, of course. But the sun was shining and it was a glorious day.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Marilyn, we have more Juncos here than the law allows - and they hop around continually, hard to get pics of them!

Hebron, KY

Murmur,

Do you have the Juncos there all year? They only are here from the Fall and depart sometime in the Spring to go back North. Would love to see their babies! Bet they're cute as can be!

Lucky you to have tons of Juncos! I see only a few during the time they're here.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Marilyn, we have the Juncos for about the same length of time as you - and oh my yes, wouldn't it be great to see their babies!!!!

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7b)

Deb, thanks for the great pictures and narrative! That wee Kinglet is absolutely adorable!
I so enjoy all the love that is shared here...

Aww shucks you guys! Thank you!!
Kim it is a Canon S3, and I am learning how to use it... still a ways to go though! All these pics above were really taken through my back bedrom window, (cleanest window in the house, hehe).

Murmur~ Sounds very cozy there even with the 22o .. a nice Turkish robe and all, girl!

I put on my cool fleece-lined waterproof boots and coat and had to go outside and fix the birds some breakfast.
Here is what it looked like when I looked out this morning> It was a wee birdy ice-skating rink, LOL!

All the trees and shrubs are iced over, but the sun is beginning to melt it all off..
Here is the Shrub in the corner where the Warbler and Wren like to hang out>>

Guess not to cold for this tough guy.. shhhh! He thinks he is hiding from me.
But how in the world can he hide with an outfit like that??

Deb, it appears you are doing very well with your new camera - great photos!!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

A while later the Cardinal found the fruit and peanut-butter/mealie suet I put out.. and he had a few bites and went back to his mate...He hops in and she emmediatly chirps. "Where have you been??... And is that peanut butter I smell??" He says, "Yes honey, and I would give you some, but it's stuck to the roof of my beak!!! You will have to jump down there and get your own this time darlin'!!"

Debnes,

I know it's cold in your area, I saw the Weather Channel this morning. Surprised your area is that cold that far south. Brrrrrrr

Your pics and comments are great! And funny ;-)) lol

Thanks for sharing!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Your welcome Marilyn!
You won't catch me complaining about the icey rain and all..Precip is precip, we will take it any way we can get it and be thankful! It is melting fast with all the sunshine, but come evening it will freeze again..

We had more visits from Warbler, Wren, Kinglet & Hawk this morning too!

Here's O-cr Warbler sneaking up on the suet from a nearby icey branch..

They always return to the scene of the crime....Such nerves of steel, he perches right here underneath my window to get a hawks-eye-view of the feeding area...as the birds in the rosebush make the loudest racket!! I can always tell when a hawk is around with the smaller birds alarming distress!
