Flower bud?

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

It's been a couple of months since I received cuttings from fellow DGers, and most rooted well and I've had them potted up in my basement under lights 24/7. They're growing like gangbusters! Just last night, though, I noticed that sticky sap on one of the leaves and when I looked under the leaf above it, sure enough, there were a couple of white flies. I HATE those things! I checked them all and I only found them on this one. I took it upstairs to isolate it and spray it, and when I did that, this little 'thing' dropped off. It looked different than the emerging new foliage, so I opened it up carefully, and inside, there was a harder, shiny thing. Was this possibly a flower bud? I know it would be strange to have one so early on a cutting, but it kind of looks like that's what this was, to me. The little shiny part is about 1/4-inch in length.

Looks like a bud to me.. can you separate the lil shiny white things? Those look like anthers to me. Congratulations to you Kbaumle!

Yes, I opened that and it separated into five separate parts. It's not the greatest picture, but you can see how it looks anyway.

Hi kbaumle,

Yes, that was a very young bud that dropped off. And sometimes brug cuttings can have a bloom on it that is bigger than the entire cutting itself, because it came from above the Y.

I noticed that you said you have then under lights that are on 24/7. This amount of light is not really the best for the plants. During the night plants utilize the light they absorb during the day to make growth. So I would suggest to put them on a timer for 12, but no more than 14 hours of light a day. You can buy a cheap timer at Wal-Mart for about $5 or so and it works well. I have 2 very large sets of lights on one timer and 6 regular old shop lights on another. So you can hook up several sets to one timer.

That is amazing to me, when you consider that just six weeks ago, they were sticks with no roots!! I was wrong, though. It's a white unnamed one, not yellow.

I just went down and put the lights on a timer. I've got it set for 14 hours. I kind of figured it wasn't the best to have them on all day and night, because they don't do that in nature, but they also don't grow in people's basements in the winter in nature, either. LOL. And they were doing so well! But I know you're right, so we'll see how it goes now, with less light.

Now to eradicate the white flies. Grrrrr.......
