A sneak peek into the incubator.. LOL

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

This is a sneak peek into one of the "incubators" in the nursery.. (where my washer and dryer used to be) The pre-school kids are next door (on the same shelf).. and the big kids are on the bottom shelf. The graduates are on the front porch or in the carport.
Hope this brought someone a smile.

I love this stuff. Do you realize just how many people have hundreds of tiny cups stuck in every available nook and cranny of their home? LOL!
We're an army of cup collectors and sprout nannies!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Joyce. Baby city. You go girl!

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Joyce I have 150 seedling at different stages and it is time to plant more. I may have to buy another green house.

But my saving grace is I know Liz and Kell are far worst then I am. Joan

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Yeah Liz! That's the beauty of DG, I am NOT alone!

Kell, I'm shocked at you for not scolding me for peeking! You know I can't leave em alone!

Joan.. Thank you! I feel a LOT better now. Well, I don't have any more room.. I'm gonna try to stop at about 60 this year.. I guess I'll have to gather some neighbors together and give a quickie crash course on basic brug care. LOL

Myrtle Beach, SC

Hugs Joyceee ! You can't stop, I have seeds to send you this weekend, LOL. Your nursery looks great and I am envious because I haven't started mine yet. I can't wait but something seems to stop me every time I get my stuff out to start planting.
Great job gf !! God bless, Margo

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

No way Joan, I am being so good this year. I am planning on living vicariously. I am not sure how many seedlings totally I will have growing. I am at the point that I think better at your house than mine. LOL I figure if I act needy enough you guys will share with me for you all are so nice! LOL

Oh Joyce, I sneak peek all the time too. Yesterday I made a hole in a pod with my thumbnail to check the seeds. All white still. Shucks.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Kell.. after probing with your fingernail.. andfoud them white.. will they still go on to develop nicely.. what color are you looking for.. would you in finding itcut the pod open and harvest... I'm the best for deadheading[ well I try to getthe oes Ican reach...givensomefree time] ...so I see few pods... but I have one developing now.. [and as you might think it's about 9' in the air ] the others I've encountered were earlier in the year.. and they did everything on their own.. so I'm pretty unfamilar with guaging their readiness...thanks..OH>> now it's green firm and quite lumpy... Gordon

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Joyce..good looking set up there.. such potential for an earth shattering release with so many started.. wishing you the best of gene pairings this season..Gordon

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Gordon. If you want to see more wild pods, you can just give a tug at the spent flower and on some cultivars they will just pull out leaving the calyx and the stamen. If it was a successful pollination you will know in about a week or 2 from then. If not, it will fall off. But the calyx is not as ugly, in fact hardly noticeable.

Yes, the peeked at pod would go on to mature usually. Sometimes I put the piece back or if it is just a flap I push it back down and then I use a sealing compound over it to reseal it. Though last summer I didn't even bother to do that and the few I checked did fine. But in this cold damp weather I should probably reseal them.

I was checking for some brownness, some seeds get almost black when ripe and others get varying degrees of brown. Unfortunately, the pod I was checking was getting soft but it was doing that because the peduncle got frost bitten and is no longer functioning. In fact all 4 are soft. I just went out and picked 2. The one that looked white from the outside actually has some color to it from the inside. Though the seeds are very soft so I think they are still too immature. I bet I get some germination if I pot them right up before they dry up.

The second pod had more color to the seeds and they are firmer so I think I will have much more success. They were both pollinated on 8/2. That should be enough time but I find winter pods often stop growing much and developing till the weather warms again.

The pod will let you know when it is ripe. Sometimes they start to split (the usual here), or the peduncle starts to yellow or you get a spot that starts to rot. Don't worry you won't miss it if you check it every week or so after the first 3 or 4 months. Some mature pods (not all) when you feel them the seeds will move around. You have a good leeway in collecting them.

The upper pod is questionable in maturity but the lower pod which is the better cross (YES!) the seeds are much more mature looking.

I crack me up... what a fun morning.. Thank you all for all the smiles.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

HAy Kell... Ithink we did it... Ichecked my pod today..and it seemed a bit soft on the tip.. so I looked inside as you taught me to.. and there they were seeds.. and from what you posted... we got'em good.. here's it getting soft Gordon

Oh WOW Gordon, sure are ripe seeds. Now the madness begins, trying to grow out tons of seeds. Remember, you must do them all for you may only have 1 very special brug to be in that pod. LOL!! Isn't it kind of thrilling? I still get all happy when I pick one.

Last night I was up till 3 AM as I put all the seeds from my 2 pods into 3 tupperwear containers in rockwool. I was peeling them best I could them being so young. I so hope I get some seedlings. If I get tons I will have to send out seedlings when they are about 5 inches.

Joyce, you too will have your own seeds soon. It is contagious! You crack me up too. LOL

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Kell,

everyone will share with you but please stay so we can keep learning. Joan

Myrtle Beach, SC

ZZ, Kell, Gordon....and everyone else !! This is just the best thread ever for seeing ripe pods and seeds. I haven't had my own to ripen yet, but at least now I know I can "peek" into one still on the tree and what to look for when I do peek:)) It is just sooo excitng watching all of you. I will be planting soon....rockwool for some, soil-less mixture for others. Since it is my first attempt I'm not sure what will work best for me so I am trying a couple ways the first time out, LOL. God bless you all, Margo

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Kell... you were peeling the whiteish ones before planting.... the ones you had fresh..??. they needed to be peeled before planting.. ??...do yo think these I have should also be peeled before planting... this week sometime..?? I have peeled older seeds... but I figured these were so tender as not to need it ..I'd considered...perhaps a short bath in
ST + H2O2 ...before planting.... but there I was making theory out of thin air.. it's nice to be able to get another opinion..
[ or better 5 ] if not an answer to questions ..... here... Gordon

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Joan! I was thinking about you today when I was out and about. You are such a dear lady and have always so supportive of me. Big hugs to you.

Good luck Margo, you are in for some fun. Watching them grow up is really a thrill. I just wish they didn't get so big. You are smart to try different ways. Some just work so much better than other ways for some people. I am a rockwool lover myself.

Oh Gordon, no you do not have to peel. I am a peeler though. Ever since Susie first showed me how, I peel. LOL. Also I use rockwool so the seeds unpeeled do not really fit in the holes. I also make my own holes in the rockwool so I can plant up to 4 times the seeds so unpeeled would never fit then. I had a bad time peeling the top pod seeds though. They were so soft from being immature that they would break open too easily and be ruined.

Here is one of the small tupperwears I did last night. Already I have a bunch germinating. YEA!!!! I slipped it out of its plastic bag for the shot. I usually try not to open them ever till they are ready to be potted up because of germs but I was so shocked to see them already germinating in about 16 hours.

Edited to add, you can see I didn't peel them clean like I usually do with mature seeds. They were just too fragile to get the cork totally off them. See how white the seed is inside the cork? Fresh, fresh seed is white and the seed gets darker as it ages.

Wowzers, Kell. Look at your pods and seeds!

Gord...awesome!!

Wow! What agreat picture, Kell! Thai is some pretty fast germination! What wunnerful cross have you got cooking there? Bj

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It is a cross I am very hopeful about. It is a double apricot X a great yellow I got from the San Francsico Arboretum.

Wish me luck!!! The double Apricot has so much frost damage it will be awhile till it blooms again!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And the one I got from the San Francsico Arboretum. They have it growing in 2 places. The best yellow I have ever seen!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

yellow...well... aside from it being yellow... perhaps the best formed flower of any.. it certainly has stature..size.. great whiskers.. and recurved enough tohave it appear quite full.. good score there..is that the bandit with it.. Gordon

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes Gordon, he got it for me. I was so thrilled. He is a very nice man! And the fact I was panting so hard, he was afraid I would have a heart attack. LOL

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL @ both of you! Sounds like me Kell... I'd probably faint.. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I sure wanted it. LOL, Joyce. I should mention before I get a lecture from anyone, that this man works for the Arboretum. In fact the brugs are ones he planted. So he is allowed to snip snip. In fact that whole piece he has there he broke off to share. He had taken me on a tour and I was so thrilled. And I have shared back. LOL!!

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

WoW! & yep! Lotsa luck to ya, that is quite purdy! Wouldn't mind helping grow a few of those out for ya, hint hint! Bj

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Bj, send me your address ASAP. They have to be potted immediately though since they are a bit young.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Kell, I remember that yellow...looks like the brug that could eat San Francisco, lol. I hope that you get some great blooms from that cross.
I feel terrible about these awful freezing temps. Thank goodness for the babies, brings some hope.

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

Kell dont FORGET my seeds ! I need something to keep me busy since I am stuck in the house still..

Elva

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Elva, your seeds are not near ready, I pollinated them late in the season. The pods are still very small and have stopped growing for the winter. Luckily, the plant was in a small enough pot that I got it moved so it did not get too frosted. But it will be awhile before the seeds are ripe.

These seeds above had to be picked early because they got frosted adn the peduncle was drying up. If I had some extra I would send them to you but I just sent them to everyone on here who liked the parents, you were just a day too late. I had to leave them in the pod to send so they would not dry out because they are young. They may not even germinate for people but I am hoping they will. Sorry! But I am glad you are up for planting seeds, must mean you are feeling much better.

Myrtle Beach, SC

Kell, if you need someone to grow out a "few" for you let me know. I do have a small greenhouse. Likewise, if you ever see something I have and you want a piece or seeds, just holler, if I have extras I'm happy to share with you. God bless, Margo

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is so nice of you, Margo! THANK YOU!! Hopefully these very PINK seeds will be ready in spring and if all the pods do well I will have them to share with you.

Elva, this is the brug I was going to share a pod with you. It is right up next to the glass of my house staying warm.

Kell,

What is the name of that very PINK princess? And if you just happened to have to give her a haircut, I would be ever so happy to pamper a cutting in the custom she has become accustom to, lol.

Joycee ! All your babies finally got me moving :)) I have 9 different groups of brugs seeds soaking. All but 2 groups came from Brenda Delph, so I have extremely high hopes because Brenda always sends the best !! I can't wait to post pictures here, lol. Another awesome batch came from Felicia and it is a such an incredible cross~Mountain Magic X Tiara...I am envisoning double bright pink ruffles *grin*..a girl came dream, can't she ?:) Thanks for the thread, God bless, Margo
PS...Kell you are very welcome. You make a great "Team Leader".

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I can't wait to see what you get, Margo. It is such fun, isn't it? Joyce puts me to shame with her great seedling table. I always so love to see what everyone gets.

Fancy seeing you over here MG! And it is good to see you back here too. Do you believe I have to go look up the name. LOL. It is one I had to name for I entered a similar picture in a calender contest so it needed a name. I won the contest and promptly forgot the name. Sadly I do not even have a back up of this one. I am living dangerously. I always tell people to make sure they do backups and then I never do which is so dumb.

Hopefully I will do a back up come spring and then if it suckers I can do more. Right now it is a skinny rod with 1 limb coming off that is full of pods. The other side of the Y got frosted off before I moved it to safety so I have no cutting material.

Keep warm! 5 inches of snow................wow. I bet it is pretty. Here we are cold and so grey! I had to go out and buy some color to cheer me up. I found big pots of cyclamen that I put by my fiornt door so I could see something pretty on my way in and out for a change. Though as you can see, my phormiums all did great and actually are one of my garden highpoints. The cold just got them to intensify their color.

Thumbnail by Kell
Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Kell,

Were we seperated at birth? I just bought myself 3 new cyclamen, but they will be living in my bathroom window for a few more months. Then I plant them out in my hosta bed and they rebloom at least one good flush for me. Have you seen the new ruffled petals out there? Oh wow!

I'm really liking your new babies with their white edging. Might have to go back to the store.......

(Not stalking Kell, just sharing interests, honest, lol)

Oh I really love yours too, MG! No, I haven't seen such pretty ones. I had to get mine because they were so gaudy with that white strip. Plus they are in big 14 inch pots. A big show. I was thinking of spraying them with Messenger to really get them going. I wonder if it will work if I bring them into where it is warm to spray them.

I imagine cyclamen do not live out where you are over winter in your zone, do they? Here they do pretty great coming back up.

You can stalk me anytime. I always love a friendly stalker. It is the unfriendly ones that are creepy! LOL

Oh the name is Kellifornia Pink. How could I forget. LOL
